Stupid deep in Twin Lakes 2

General Discussions: Guest Shots - Gallery 1 (2006/2007): Stupid deep in Twin Lakes 2

By skylar on Monday, April 09, 2007 - 08:46 pm: Edit Post

After reading John's journal tonight, I would have to agree, EPIC CONDITIONS! Just unbelievable. I met more people from John's site on this trip than I ever have. I am a shy guy by nature, so unless you see my sled somewhere, and come up and talk to me, you won't even know it's me. So, it was nice to meet, Brooks, Chazz, Patrick, Andy, Chris from Team Hennesy, and asb3lakes and her husband. Everyone was really cool. Andy and Patrick, you guys are hysterical. Can't wait to ride next year with you guys. Just remind me not to have the same sled as Andy, holy crap was that funny! Lance's switchback is all good.:-)

Anyways, here are some more pics.

Friday morning, Kim carving

005

Kim again

008

Untouched and deep!

009

Yeehaw!

011

Well, looky there, no one has been here!

012

Me stuck in da big drift

014

The hole we made to get Kim out. We were able to get my sled to where my helmet is, then I got stuck again. So, we rolled it into the hole left by Kim, easiest way to get ot out!

015

Patrick and Andy, I've talked to Andy on here and HCS a lot over the last two years, but was never able to be up there at the same time as them, until now. Kim and I stopped in at the skeeter inn, and there they were! They have a camp out by Lake Superior. I just want to know one thing, one kind of idiots ride with the same gear?! Boy do they look goofy standing next to each other.:-)

017

Wait a minute! It must be a brother thing!

018

Eman, Lance and Kim

018

Andy stuck

022

The sleds taking a break before dinner.

025

Saturday morning, 12-14 inches of new snow, headed over to the Parkview for breakfast.

028

After breakfast, back over to Krupp's to wait for Scottiking to fix his sled. So, we tore up Krupp's field. Like I said, it was stupid deep, I was laughing in my helmet the whole time. Here is Joe's son Emanuel on my brothers sled. Eman was riding his dads 02 RMK, and it locked up tight on Friday afternoon. Jeez, first trip to the UP, and he mechanically wrecks his first sled! ATTA BOY! really wasn't his fault, the sled was on it's last breath. This simple gesture he is making sums it up. Man, I was 23 years old before I made it to the UP, he is 12! Lucky dog!

046

047

Right after I got done carving, sled was running a little rich, I wonder why? LOL.

055

Scott and Chris from Team Hennesey.

056

Loading up to head home.

057

I felt sorry for Chris, brand new sled, and it burns down on him. I could tell that while Joe and I were jumping, he was just itching to jump also. Being a young guy like he is, I am sure he would have went higher and farther than we did. It would have been fun to see if I would have been able to macth him. Maybe next time eh Chris? ( I know he would go bigger though, 39 years old, vs, 23 years old. LOL)

It was an awesome two days of riding, I want to give a big THANK YOU, and I LOVE YOU, to my wife Corie who allows me to go up as much as I do. Thanks for understanding this addiction I have honey!

Just got back from Bristows and They are going to tear apart Chris's new sled in the morning and have it back to us thursday so we can head to krupps again friday!
I looked at an 06 switchback 900 there and they looked at mine for a trade! thinking of going up 4 years! it looks sweet but I don't know too much about them yet! need to do some research!
Did ya get that video I took of your jump? I should of done more videos but I didn't have much riding time due to the breakdown and Chris not having a sled to ride!
Thanks for loaning him the swithback BTW!

Hey Skylar, I've got an '06 s/b900. Really like the sled. Make sure if you get one all the updates are done.Check all the sites for clues on what else you can look for. Had mine out West, only regret was I shoulda gone with a 2" track vs. 1.25" stocker..Looks like a lot of fun up at Krupp's neighborhood! Wish I was there!

Kingofmountain, thanks for making the roads safe! But, man, it must have been driving you NUTS to see all that snow, and not be out playing in it!

John, as we were carving up Krupp's field, my brother kept telling me to stop and take more pictures, video, etc. I was like NO WAY! Not going to let you guys have all the fun!

That might have been a once in a lifetime snow event, and to be able to come up there at just the right time, awesome. What a way to the end the season huh?

maybe:-)

By admin on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 07:38 pm: Edit Post

Skylar-

It was a great way to "end" the season.

One of those rides that will remain in my memorey bank forever. Added to the December of '05 ride in the fluff and the ride in 78 degree temps in April a few years ago. Who knows, perhaps another ride in 70 degree temps will occur this year!

Skylar,

Wasn't the bent tunnel on the RMK just fixed... from jumping???

By scott_b on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 09:47 pm: Edit Post

And thanks for the great pics, always look forward to your posts after a trip. Hope to meet up with you some day.

By skylar on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 09:54 pm: Edit Post

Nope, the RMK was not fixed yet. I called the dealer Thursday and told them I was swinging by to pick it up. It is still ridable. It wasn't the jump that bent it, it was what I landed on, and the angle that I landed at, that bent it.

It was sacrificed in the name of fire safety training. One step closer to the dream becoming a reality. But, still a few years to go though.

Go check out Team Kesslers pictures in the guest shots gallery, freaking awesome!

By skylar on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 - 10:50 pm: Edit Post

LMAO. I was just thinking of last weekend as I was looking at the pictures here, and I have to tell the story. As Joe and I and his son and my brother towed the 02 RMK back to Krupp's, and to get the back up sled, the rest of the gang stayed at the BP. Well, Andy and Patrick are brothers, and like most brothers, not to easy on each other. Lance and Andy have the same year sled, except Andy's has a small windshield and handguards. Anyways, Patrick's summit's front bumper was damaged a little bit, so Andy kept kicking it, and telling Patrick he was going to wreck it more. So Patrick decides he is going to ram his sled into Andy's, at a distance of about 5' or so. So he does, and breaks the rest of his bumper. Weeelll, he actually slammed into Lance's switchback, and not Andy's. I wasn't even there to see it happen, and I was laughing my arse off. No damage to Lance's sled.

Ahh yes, good times in da UP.

April 10th and there is still snow like that to be had at Krupp's? Man, I am living in the WRONG state. Iowa sucks...

Altho, it is snowing right now and the two places I've checked, the ones that I resort to when John isn't giving out forecasts, are saying we could see between 8 to 12 inches by tomorrow afternoon. It's been warm and the ground is softened up, but if there is that much on the ground, I'm putting a few more clicks on the odometer for the season!

John, what do you say? North central Iowa have a chance of good snow tomorrow? This has just been a completely strange season... short too.

By tilltheend on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 11:17 am: Edit Post

Wait Skylar my bro started it! He broke that thing in Wyoming in February, I told him it would go through the powder better without the bumper! And for the record I have one good handguard left after friday. It was a good day to bad we could only ride friday, were thinking about heading back up this weekend, waiting on how the weather is. You guys heading back up?

By willey on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 01:24 pm: Edit Post

Skylar, from the looks of it you guys had an awesome time. How do you like your RMK? I am thinking about picking up a 07' 600 RMK 144.

Dougyb, drop me a line next winter some time. I am always up for the deep stuff. Just need to make up my mind if I am going to stretch the edge 800 or move up to a RMK.

I am so jealous of all you guys!!! Hope to meet you all some day to bust some pow!!!

Have a great summer.

By skylar on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - 09:14 pm: Edit Post

TTE, my bad, I though you broke it a little first.LOL. It was still funnier then . Not sure if we are going up or not. It will probably be a last minute descision.

Willey, I love the RMK. If you are into off trail enough to warrant buying one, you will love it. The thing jumps up on the snow very quickly. I did ride my Renegade a little last weekend in the deep. From a dead stop you had to hammer it, and keep it hammered, to get up on the snow. My rmk would basically just drive out of anything. I don't know how many times I pulled up next to my brother and stopped to help him get out, and then I would just ride away. Awesome sled.

So the mansion is gone eh?

By mnnolesks on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 01:07 am: Edit Post

Not to be rude or out of line but some parts of this thread have lost their site. The pics are great but it seems this thread has been taken over by pics and vids and their comments.
Their is now a user pics thread, as some of us are trying to get condition updates and end up having to scroll through pic comments to see there is nothing there.
Just asking we self police ourselves and use the designated areas for what they are for.

By twark_kesslers on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 01:18 am: Edit Post

I would contend that the pictures definitely indicate snow conditions. Even look at the title. If John Dee complains will obviously comply with his wishes.

Twarkness

By mnnolesks on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 02:41 am: Edit Post

I will not argue that the pictures tell of the past conditions. Personally I just see that this section of the boards has become a picture post and comment section. While it has become hard to sort through for true conditions. As I said let us self police ourselves, If lots of pics, let us all say, they are in picture thread, and post our condition statements here.

By snowstump on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 08:44 am: Edit Post

there is always someone complaining about something, crap, are you sure your not just jelouse that you don't have a story to tell? P.S. shoutout to the J DEE family, have a good summer. I'm still high from all the POW awsome weekend!!!

By skylar on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 11:37 am: Edit Post

Don't worry, I'll move this one to the guest shots soon. Maybe when I get back Sunday from another weekend of riding.

By marty700 on Friday, April 13, 2007 - 11:48 am: Edit Post

I was in Twin Lakes this week. Rode Monday to Wednesday with my son. The area is definitely getting spent. The warmer temps and traffic have all but killed the Bill Nichols trail. Off trail riding is still decent, but very few areas are left for new tracks and many forestry/logging roads were also getting bumpy. Best riding was north of Houghton. You have to trailer North to get over the bridge, but North of Calumet, the trails get good. We broke trail the last 15 miles into Copper Harbor on Tuesday. We were literally bushwhacking as we had to move many downed branches and even a 5 inch diameter downed tree. The fresh snow was worth it though - I'd say it was about 24"-36" deep on the trail, deeper in some spots. The view from atop Brockway was breathtaking - because of the time of year, you could literally see Thunder Bay on the other side of Lake Superior. For those looking to ride this weekend, I'd defintely suggest trailering North. There's plenty of snow left up there and its in pretty good shape. I know we left the last 15 miles into Copper Harbor in beautiful condition - on the return trip form Copper Harbor, we tried to smooth it out a bit for subsequent riders. Finally, one note: the gas station(s) in Copper Harbor were closed. I had to syphon gas from my son's long track (1996 Ski-doo Tourning LE 380cc) to my short track (2002 Ski-doo Legend 700cc) to get back to the gas stop just South of Phoenix. I'll try to post pictures early next week.

By mnnolesks on Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 11:21 pm: Edit Post

Looking back I am sorry for the way I had posted or worded the message/s. I was leaving to head back to the UP in a few hours and wanted to try and find condition updates for the area, and was frustrated having to scroll through countless picture comments. I just updated the condions thread that was started on my opinion of what I say from friday - early this morning. I will post the pictures later as soon as I get them sent to me, in the pictures area.
