Tell me I am nuts but last weekend off Grand Marais Mi I thought I could see ice pack in the distance. How is the coverage on Superior and are we in danger of getting shut down on the lake effect??

I am pretty sure what you saw was some loosely compacted ice that broke free from the short and drifted off shore due to a change in wind direction.
This band of loosely compacted ice is only about 5 miles wide, so the lake is still pretty wide open to make LES.
