On Saturday the family and I decided to go to Soudan Mine State Park in Soudan, MN. You can take underground mine tours there. The history of the mine is it started in the late 1800's as an open pit mine but became too dangerous (2 people died each week) so they decided to go underground with it.

Here's the entrance to the mine where you get on the elevator to go down. The elevator travels at 1000'/minute.

Here we are at the bottom, 2341' below ground.

The ore in this mine was the purest in the world. You could weld right to the walls. Check out this wall, pure iron ore.

There is also a big physics lab in the bottom of the mine where they are shooting neutrinos through solid rock to other receivers thousands on miles away. You can tour that section also but we stuck with the historic tour.

That place is cool my wife, kids and I were there last year. The site that they shoot the neutrinos from is about 20 minutes from my house, so it was kind of neat to see both ends.

I toured the Vulcan mine in the UP. It was really cool. This one looks to be much deeper. I love the history of it. Thanks for sharing the pics !
