My truck just turned 100k and when I change the oil (takes 6 quarts) I only drained out 4 and 1/2 quarts. I know these engins burn a little oil but a quart and a half in 5k seems alot. What is your experience with these motors. I was going to keep it for another 50k or so if possible, but maybe nows the time to trade. This truck has been flawless and never had any issues.

1.5 qts in 5k miles? That's not too bad for a 100k push rod motor. Keep it topped off during change intervals.

Mine uses oil. Not sure how much, but it's been doing it for quite a while (I'm at almost 98k right now). My "check oil level" light comes on always before it's due for an oil change. If it's burning it, I sure don't see or smell it in the exhaust, and it's not leaking it either. At any rate, I've asked a couple shops about it, they looked it up in some GM TSB's and according to them, it is a normal and acceptable condition.

Towing seems to cause it to go through more.

wow this is some great timing!!
I have a 2002 Chevy 1\2ton with 5.3 and when i turned 100,000 a few weeks back I started to have oil use issue--well last night I had to pass a few cars and when I stomped on it I seen alot of smoke coming from my tail pipe.

Russhlio,

This is the first time my light has ever come on, I have been using Mobil 1 5w-30 I'm wondering if I should change to a 10w-30 in the summer or if that would even make a differance. I have never seen smoke or had any dripping ever, the motor seems to run great.
