Depends on what bone broke. A few years ago I broke mine in a car accident and it was my scaffoid (spelling) bone. Tried to heal it on its own but hard bone to heal and so I had to have a screw put it in. Accident was in Aug. and lucky it healed come middle of Jan. I was given the ok to ride. First time out I hit a bump and wow did I feel it in the wrist. Lucky again no damage done. They say scaffoid bone is a hard one to heal. Your Dr. should know. Be careful and take care of it and hopefully your Dr. is right and you shold be good to go.

U should only have the cast on for 3-4 weeks. 100% by 4-6 weeks at most. I've had 12 broken bones over the years and the wrists heal pretty quick. I road once with a case one the left hand most of the season. I had the doc put on the case so the hand curved to the handle bars. I know it was nuts but it worked and I was still able to ride.

I broke mine a few years back but it bent under until my fingers touched the underside of my forearm. I was in 3 different casts for a total of just over 3 months. I was able to modify my third cast enough to ride dirt bike, but snowmobiling was done early that year for me. Still isnot right to this day.

Thursday March 1, 1990 at about 10:30 am, the first day of a four-day weekend I put my sled into a tree south of Hurley. Spent the rest of the day at Grandview Hospital in Ironwood getting my left hand and wrist x-rayed and set in a split/temporary cast. My friend had another sled about an hour away, so we traded the wrecked sled for the good one and rode the rest of the weekend.
The biggest hang-up was getting a jacket onto my left arm and finding a glove to fit over the partially cast hand.
I honestly don't remember the time it took to heal, but I'm sure I spent at least a month in a cast. Good luck.

Pat, Sorry to hear about the broken throttle wrist!
If you cannot do your job or anyother job around the company, they should put you on short-term disability. There is also the Federal Medical Leave Act that you are protected under provided your company employes more than 50 people.
Just get to your HR department and get the paperwork - make sure you fill it out completely.
GOOD LUCK! You should heal fast. I broke my throttle thumb while riding. It hurt like a BLEEP but I didn't know I broke it. About 3 months later (in March) I finally went to the doc, she said it was too late to fix it, so now I have to wear a brace to be able to hold the throttle for more than 10 mins.
Scott - 12 broke bones - no wonder Ali has to keep your leash short!

off to see the 3rd doc with them only taking my co-pay and srnding me on to another doc!!great heath care system we have-
looks like scaphoid fracture but they need to see were it broke on that bone. That bone can break in 3 places
1 not bad, good blood flow heal in 3 to 4 weeks
2 not so good, bad blood flow, longer recovery
3 oh no vary bad, surgury, pins, screw very bad blood flow..
if I know my luck its #3
#3 is not as bad as you think. I have muliple plates and pins in (don't ask) and it seems that the bones heal faster with the pins and plates holding everything together.

About 10 years ago I broke the nivicular bone I am sure that is not spelled correct. It is at the base of the thunb and has little blood flow and takes forever to heal. I was in a cast from end of January to early June about 18 weeks and it still wasn't healed. It is a hyper extention break very common for motocross riders and skiers.
Good luck with the break. The bathroom is also a challenge.
Watch out for the racing stripes

Like I had said earlier that is the one I broke. I went the surgery route and no regrets. 6 years later no pain, stiffness and Dr. said shouldn't even get arthritis. It was a day surgery in and out in 3-4 hrs. Would go that route again in a heart beat if I had to. Let's hope it is #1. Just remeber if you need to go this route must be careful after it is healed. I had my surgery end of Oct. and by Jan 1 was riding with Dr. approval. Good luck.

Rusty1577 I hope things go as well for you as they did me. Like I said no regrets on my side. Just got to be careful when you do start riding again. Like I said first time out I hit a bump and OUCH. All was good. Make sure you follow Dr. orders. Wish you the best and hope you make it out riding in Feb.
This was on my right hand. Throttle hand. Screw is still in.

Rusty are they doing the bone graph along with the screw?
I was not offered the surgery when I broke mine, it still cracks and is stiff and gets sore when I keep wait on it like when riding a motorcycle. A push up is very painfull also.
I think if the surgery was offered to me at the time and not 16 weeks in I would have done it.
Good luck I hope everything goes well with surgrey

I can't remember what they told me about the process. I do know a couple of other people that had the surgery done. They said the most painfull part was the bone graph they took from their hip.

11-26-2009, 09:12 AM
oh ick---I was looking online last night and it looks like they are doing this surgery with an orthroscopic? and that way the make a small hole, sounds like recovery from this type of surgery is shorter than cutting it open??
boy I hope this works with full recover as a long day in the back country or cycle ride to Sturgis might be a little painful..
thanks skeeter for the info

Hopefully there well be no bone graph for you. They didn't have to do one on me. They didn't even put me under. Light sedative to relax me and then blocked it. Can't hardly see my scare. During surgery I heard something that sounded like a drill and I said what is that a drill and Doc said no it is a screwdriver and not a Sears Robuck. Good Luck.

11-26-2009, 09:39 AM
Good luck Pat, arthroscopy is by far the best way to go if you have to have it done. Follow Dr's orders to a tee and you'll be back before you know it. I just had my shoulder done 9 weeks ago and have done my phys therapy daily and I should be ready to go in a few weeks. Hopefully yours is far shorter/less severe than that. Take it easy on it the first couple weeks after for sure, it's the most critical healing time. Otherwise you might be riding "lefty" style for a while.. one handed!!

peppermill,
I see you said it took from aug till jan to get better? is this the entire time from surgery? from surgery to recovery time?
has anyone else broke their Scafoid bone? if so any info on the herbert screw? reovery time would be great!!looks like 3 to 6 weeks in a cast after surgery...??
skeeter2010
11-30-2009, 02:57 PM
The scafoid is the same as the nevicular check out the site below. I hate to be that guy, but it hard to tell how long it will take you to heal. Mine took forever(without surgry), It's not like you a can change anything now, only time will tell. I hope yours heals faster than mine if not you can always ride in a cast or get it taped for extra support http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/otherfractures/a/scaphoid.htm

No. I broke it in the accident the end of Sept. We didn't really find out it was broken until about 10 days after the accident. The first xray the night of the accident didn't show the break. Because of other injuries I was on crutches but my wrist kept hurting so then I went back to Doc. and he took more and different xrays than the hospital did and sure enough it was broken. I messed around about 2-3 weeks debating if I should have the surgery or let it heal on its own but after I found out how long I would have to be casted and not know if it was going to heal my Doc. persuadeed me to have the surgey the end of Oct. By the first of Jan. I was back riding. I would say about 8 weeks for me but I am a diabetic and sometimes takes longer to heal. I don't know about herbert screw. All I know is I don't regret it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Screw is still in and no problems. I had what they called a soft cast. Like a brace on the bottom and then thick wrapping across the top. Wasn't too uncomfortable. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck

OK that's what I was thinking!
peppermill,
That is what you have "HERBERT SCREW" this is the fastest way of recovery 3 to 8 weeks and the diabetic part probably played a huge part as they say the better the blood flow to the bone the faster it heals. Thank you for your replies as Doc don't say much!learn more here on the Internet. LOL was A little worried about procedure but looks to be the answer to having the best results.
Skeeter,
from all my reserch it looks like the way you healed is the longest route, The screw takes the casting time away!was yours cracked all the way across "displaced?"was that Docs idea to cast? Thanks again for your help.

Mine was displaced. I had worked at a motorcycle shop and saw a ton of these and asked the Doc what his thoughts were and he recommend that I have it casted. Than 16 weeks later he said he recommed the surgry. I wanted to Kill him, everyone I talked to said they didn't heal very fast and ended up having surgry in the end. I wish I would have pushed the topic a little more. Also at the time I broke mine they cut open the wrist and did the bone graph. I am sure the the process you are going to have done will heal much quicker and be less painfull than what they were doing 14 years ago.

Peppermill can you tell me how long the swelling took for you....how were you doing at 4 weeks as that is where I am at this time, and Im still swelled.
peppermill
12-27-2009, 03:41 PM
If I remember right it took quite a while for the swelling to go down but it was feeling pretty good at 4 weeks. Couldn't really do any lifting or twisting but was feeling good. Dr. wouldn't give me the ok to ride until he x-rayed it and could see how it was healing. Are you still in the soft cast? Have you had it x-rayed again? Just take it easy. Don't push it. I know you are itching to get out and ride but you have only 1 chance to heal it and heal it right so missing a few weeks of riding will be worth it. Missing a few weeks versus screwing it up so it bothers you the rest of your life wouldn't be worth it. Please take care of it and then when you start to ride be very careful for a while.

as for getting back I'm not trying to hurry it "don't get me wrong i cant wait" I do want to heal it right. I just have not found anyone that had same break with the same surgery, but you!! so your insight is awesome and most people say6 to 12 months OUCH!!I have next x ray om 1-6

I broke my throttle wrist this time 4 years ago. I broke it snowmobiling and had a plate and 7 screws put in. I got my cast off and started PT just in time for my snowmobile trip 4 weeks after I broke it. I wore an oversized glove with a brace on it and got along pretty good. It hurt but I was not going to let that keep me from going on my trip. My wife and doctor were not very happy with me, but I used my head when riding and took it easy. I was just glad to be on the trip. The only time I noticed it was this fall when we had a sudden change in the weather but that was the only time in 4 years I noticed it. I won't lie my physical therapy hurt more then breaking the wrist.

2 years ago from last monday i broke my throttle side wrist snowboarding in Ontario, and came home to a nice big dumping of snow. trails opened the next day, and i was out riding 3 days after i broke it hahaha
i only had a temporary plaster cast too, so that was interesting lol
mine healed in 4 1/2 weeks, and Dr. said the snowmobiling helped it, due to getting increased blood flow to my arm lol
it healed fully, and doesn't bother me usually
i've had once where i was shovelling muck and it gave me a bit of an issue, but it was really cold that day too lol
hope your recovery continues to go great!
