So far I have seen warmer then normal and less precip as well as cooler then normal and less precip. Not digging the less precip part.

I would guess a mild winter just based on how cool it has been and the fact that weather patterns rarely stay the same.

Unfortunately I agree with madddog I think this cool weather came at the wrong time of year and the pattern will change for the winter. I really hope I'm wrong though.

I would like to give you folks a ray of hope in what I have been taught by way of observation. The Apple trees are loaded, the Mountain Ash Berry trees are loaded & the Oak trees are loaded with acorns. The little rodents (chipmunks & squirrel's) have been busy early gathering. Despite the presence of El Nino, I am willing to say this should be a snowy one for us here in the Keweenaw. Just my observation. http://www.johndee.com/discuss/clipart/happy.gif-Mezz

NOAA is predicting a strengthening of the current mild El Nino, which generally portends a poor January and February in terms of snowfall.

Based on past MI winters, it will be cold and snowy and I heard the Indians are gathering wood like crazy. Some areas in the 20s last nite.

Got an email from porKypine about this, and he said there has been frost at the seKret spot everyday for the past week. And also his dog's water dish had ice on it this morning.

He is expecting snow any day.

porKypine, rodnee and diK have been camping at the seKret spot since his trailer was forclosed on in June.

He will be heading below the bridge for a few days and staying at the sample cabin on I-75 and will give a report when he gets back.

OK I'm confused. When I type backslash image{my text} I get this error message: "The formatting code image does not exist or cannot be used in this context." Just like John says and like I've done before ... any clue what I'm doing wrong? (I had to type the word backslash instead of \ so I could post this.) ARGGGGG!

Cold Air over Warm Lake= Ample LES!. I'll take that equation any day!http://www.johndee.com/discuss/clipart/happy.gif-Mezz

Two possible problems with the Farmer's Almanac Midwest Winter Forecast map, which shows Bitterly Cold & Dry for much of the Midwest:

1. Dry: The drier the air upstream of the lake, the less moisture it has to start out with and thus the less moisture it will be able to return as snow.

2. Bitterly Cold: Might make for a good delta-T (temperature difference) between the lake water and the air at 850 mb (about 2-3000 feet) for early LES formation, but extended bitter cold could lead to an early freeze over for western Lake Superior, thereby killing prospects for subsequent LES.

The remaining factor for LES formation is wind speed and direction (which of course also relates to which way is "upstream"); west & northwest winds being ideal for LES through most of the western UP and the Keweenaw.

At newstands I have seen at least three different Farmer's Almanacs, The Old Farmer's Almanac, The Farmer's Almanac and Harris' Farmers Almanac. Which one is the one to believe? I'm waiting for John's winter weather predictions later this fall.

Haven't found the Old Farmers Almanac yet. Anyone know what their prediction is?

porKypine is back at the seKret spot. I just talked to him and he said they had a few flakes of snow early this morning.

diK's water dish had so much ice on it this morning that rodneE had to break it with a stick.

A farmer told me many years ago, look at how high the spiders build their webs in the fall and it will give you an idea of the following snowfall.

Darn if it hasn't been right the times I remeber to check. If they build up high, generally heavy snow winter.

So, where are you seeing the webs these days?

Normally I find them at mid-face level as I walk into them.
