How many miles/hours is the trail ride from Bruce Crossing to Munising/Wetmore, MI?

Our group is planning to trailer our sleds from Minneapolis to Bruce Crossing, stay overnight there, and leave the next morning for Munising. We will stay in Munising or Wetmore one night, see Pictured Rocks, etc., and then head back to Bruce Crossing.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone that's ridden that route. I'd also like suggestions for places to stay in/near Bruce Crossing. We're also thinking of staying at the Kemosabe Cabins in Wetmore. Anyone stayed there in the past? Thanks. John

My wife and I like the trail 8 from Ishpemning to Sidnaw normally there is a section about 3-5 miles that's not groomed by Lake Michigame. I would say it takes us 3.5 hours one way . I think BC to Sidnaw trail 8 is a fast 40 miles and Ishpemning to Munising is about 1.5 hours. BC is Tupulos a nice place to stay. These are estimates I haven't been past Sidnaw going east in 3 years.

Don't do this trip early in the year. The area around lake Michigame is a swamp and is not good until the weather is cold a while. The map even says so. One year we could not get through in December. deep wide water holes

Thanks for the advice, micelist. We're going the 3rd week in January, so hopefully everything is frozen up by then. Any idea how many trail miles it is from Bruce Crossing to Munising, and how long it will take for a small group of experienced riders?

The mileage depends upon the route you take. I know it is 298 miles from Mercer, WI to Munising as we did this route last January. It is 185 miles from Sidnaw to Munising riding on trail #8, so add the distance from Bruce Crossing to Sidnaw for your total.

Our experienced group of 5 riders left Mercer at 07:00 and arrived in Munising at 19:30. We stopped from breakfast in Watersmeet and lunch in Isphiming. Don't forget about the one-hour time change.

The trail from Bruce Crossing to Sidnaw is all railroad grade so you should be able to cover that distance quickly. If my memory is right, we filled up in Sidnaw at around 10:00, which means it took us 8.5 hours from Sidnaw to Munising (Comfort Inn) including a 1 hour stop for lunch and normal fuel stops. I have already deducted the one-hour time change from the duration.

Limey, we are going to get on trail 8 and take that the whole way. We are staying south of Munising/Wetmore, just off trail 8. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I should have added that we did NOT go through Marquette. Instead, we turned south before Marquette onto trail #8 and rode to Gwinn and then east to Munising. You can reduce the miles by going through Marquette but that trail's condition can by rough as it is quite busy.

Trail 8 is RRB & you can rock & roll...... some do triple digits no problem...just stop for the stop signs & pull over for faster sleds & let them pass saftly. Don't be a trail hog on 8 if you are sleddin to see the sights & don't stop on 1 lane bridges pull off & walk back to take pictures.

Thanks, whitedust. Our objective is to get to the deep snow near Pictured Rocks, so we'll be (safely) rockin' & rollin' down trail 8. If we're going at a good clip, how long do you think it will take us to get from Bruce Crossing to Wetmore/Munising with minimal stops?

maximumpsi: I'll be riding 8 east this season doing about the same route you are considering intending to spend some $$ out that way since not well traveled. I usually I head north off 8 @ 3, 12 or 109 for the deeper snow then loop back to Phelps WI for day trips. I don't know the milage but would suggest you start in Watersmeet so you can access that area from west, north & south. Trail 2 is even better for high speed running than 8 & you have many more options to head north thru many wooded trails that use forest roads & twistys so you can change things up. BC is a 1 trick pony not much to do there. Watersmeet is better or LandO for starting point & trails are always well groomed.
