How early in the season can people start to ride on Gogebic? I am planning a trip up there the week bewteen Xmas and New Years. I have been up there numerous times but its usually in Jan and Feb.
Thanks!

I've ridden there between xMas and New Years and had mixed conditions in the past. One year, the trail between Wakefield and Bergland that runs along the highway was not fully frozen and there were lots of open swamps to run through. I saw people getting stuck and it looked awful. The lake may or may not be safe depending upon how cold it gets in December and how much snow falls on top of the ice. A warmer December and/or big snowfalls can make for slushy conditions. Three years ago, warm weather came through and only places from Bergland north had rideable trails. People staying further south had to trailer up to Greenland or Mass City to ride.
With that said, you can almost always ride north and east of Lake Gogegic as there aren't that many swamps or lakes.

Pick a different week if you can, lots of traffic that week. I'll be there myself but that's when the kids are off school. Riding early in the day helps.

Most years you can ride well before X mas week, but as stated above you may have mixed results because of the traffic. Good snow conditions down south could help that out. I personally would never ride during that period, but its understandable if you have the time off.

I would do it...especially if you are staying in the area. If need be you can trailer about 30 minutes and find the snow.
