Wow, No snow,50 degrees, not many deer, not many hunters.pretty quiet. Looks like the Wis Dnrs masterplan to eventually close up every small northwoods town to grow more trees is actually happening! Tomorrow I'am going to try and Video the herd as it stampedes south and hunters practice Herd Control like the mountain man did with the Buffalo!! http://www.johndee.com/discuss/messages/5/120261.gif

Lots of hunters in Eagle River in Trigs buying every thing from gallons of Vodka to toilet paper. Pretty much buck only hunt this year but I don't think they care & just like being in deer camp.

Ubee hauled dirt in wheelbarrow all afternoon no shots even at sunset. Nice day but no shooting. Usually sounds like a small war on opening day around here. I'm betting kill rate way down this year.

I finished roofing job on my house and had a limping doe with 2 fawns stampede thru the fog past the house and very few shots till almost dark. First time in 51 yrs I didnt buy a WI. rifle tag. DNR will blame it on the fog. LOL

We were out in force with all 9 of us. Came home with 5 bucks and 2 does. Overall a good day and a half of hunting on the family land.

Lots of shooting around us and deer moving all day long.

WI Rapids - Counted 36 shots on Sat. and only 7 until 10:00 on Sat. Like it was said above - it usually sounds like a small war. Our group of 5 did poorly - on private land.

Not much action in Presque Isle. We were told at close on Saturday at the gas station that only 4 were registered. I was out from open to close on Sat and Sun and the only thing I saw was a wolf that ran down the deer path I was watching. Must have weighed 100 pounds. Lots of wolf tracks out there each morning following deer tracks. One guy in a group saw an albino.

landoman: When you checked in what did they say for kill numbers? Want to sell me some jerky?

We hunt in Neillsville west of 73 in unit 58 which is a HCU. This is farm country but all of our land is oak forest, low swamp, or something in between.

When we registered on Saturday night around 600pm in town, the registration station was pretty slow. Typically this is a busy place. We had 3 bucks and 2 does at that time.

Sunday when we registered around noon, there was about a 5 minute wait with about 12 or so cars at the registration station.

As far as jerky, this week I will most likely get one more and the second one is the one I take the Lake Tomahawk meat market for jerky and sausage. Most of it is gone pretty quick though.....

just a fyi lando man. little ones become big ones. there isnt much that will the deer herd up north. i beilive wolfes have a huge play in it. we are just starting to see them in south western wi at lot more since last year. i stopped at 4 different registration stations and all of them have been very slow. i cant wait to hear all the excuses on the news beginning of next week from the dnr. hunting was great 3 to 5 years ago until they decided to let you shoot what you wanted till january 5. only ones enjoying the seasoon so far is insurance companies

Make all the comments you like about our "little ones". They all taste the same and ya can't eat the antlers. Not everyone is out to get a trophy. If happens by, great. If not, I am plenty happy with a half rack 6 or 3 year old doe and have no problem with taking these deer.

As far as hunting until January 5. I like the long season structure here. I typically will start hunting in October with bow, go through the gun season, head into muzzleloader, and top if off with late bow in a metro unit locally here until the end of January. Not everyone agrees with the structure or the dnr but I for one love to hunt more than anything and am happy to do so for 4 months of the year.

It appears right now that deer kill is way down in Wi. Mi.and Mn. Who do you blame? wolves, bears, wcd, economy, cars, dnr, technology, ourse lves? DNR is like Russia. On TV DNR guy say hunt is down 46% from last year but fail to say hunt last year was down 29% from the year before!!
On Rhinelander tv some idiot old senile dnr spokesman told the public that the woods was so dark and foggy that the hunters could't see the deer that were out there but should have heard them. •••• I cant believe they let this guy speak on tv! lmfao!!

I'm not a deer hunter, so please don't yell if I sound stupid!! But, several years ago, wasn't the population of the deer herd getting out of control? If so, wouldn't the DNR be "happy" to an extent that the kill numbers are down? This would mean they have successfully brought the population more "under control." I may be completely wrong, but please be kind!

Landoman nice harvest. Hit a deer with my snomo trailer outside Neillsville on 73 more like stupid deer ran into trailer. There used to be many deer in that area.

Ubee: I think it is bears & wolves eating fawns up here. Many agressive doe incidents this year between man & doe the DNR has never seen before. Doe know they are losing fawns so are protecting them more. Of course the DNR has no idea why this year we had agreesive doe injuring people.

Here are the opening weekend number for the last 3 years in WI!!

"A statewide survey found 100,330 deer were registered Saturday and Sunday; the 2008 opening weekend registration was 133,828 deer. In 2007, it was 171,584 deer."

I hunt in SE Wisconsin on Private land and used to see from 10-20 deer per day! Now the last few years it has gone from 20 slowly down to about 5 per day last year and this year 1 or 2. The heard just is not anywhere where it was after 6 years of Earn a Bucks, Extended Gun hunts, and Doe only hunts.. But the DNR I am sure is happy, and will also say the numbers are only down because of warm weather and a lot of standing crops around the state! In fact here is a qoute from the DNR's big game expert....

Those deer are still out there," said Keith Warnke, DNR big game ecologist. "There is still a lot of hunting left."The weather was mild, which made it easier for hunters to stay in the field, but it also featured fog in parts of the state that impaired visibility

In addition, more standing corn than usual and a lack of snow cover may have reduced hunters' success.

Good luck all fellow hunters

Hunted this past Friday Saturday, & Sunday in central IL. Our group only had 2 deer kills button buck & a 10 pointer non-typical(4 by 6). Most of the guys in our group are beginning to be picky and want a wall hanger as well as most of us are not shooting any of the small deer in hopes to have a good group of bucks next year. The bucks were paired up with does rutting pretty good this past week so it was wait for the doe to pass and see if a buck was following. I myself passed up about 8-12 deer in shooting distance(shotgun(slug) distance. about 6 or so bucks that were 6 or 8 pointers. One of the 8 pointers was about 6-8 corn rows away as I was hunting the edge of a cor field that day.
Going back next weekend for second season hopefully i see one of the big boys that has been seen roaming around they are large 10point plus deers.

THAT IS STUPID!! Now the next time it is foggy start rapid firing at the rustle in the woods as it MUST be a deer.
