I have just seen the 2009-2010 trail map and there are some errors on it.
1. Trail 8/15 to Sidnaw through the gorge is now open.
(map shows re-route off S. Laird road on FH 1360)

2. Trail 159 from Baraga to 8/15 is closed for the second year. (easement issues)

There is some good news I would like to add. After many years of hard work... the 109 re-route has been approved! We are hoping that the new trail will be open for the 2010-2011 season. This new trail will remove S. Laird road and the nasty swamps south of the Alston Cemetery. This was accomplished with years of hard work from the locals and the grant sponsor in cooperation with the Michigan DNR and the US Forrest Service. My understanding is that this work began in the late 90's but the local's and the trail sponsor never gave up and continued with diligence to achieve this goal.

04 renegade. will they still have that bypass around that washout to baraga or just the old way ? the new trail bypass was fun and fast just longer. would be nice to have the option from sidnaw to baraga either short or long

Regarding the trail 159 (point #2), I assume that you can still get to Baraga from Sidnaw on trail 15?

pwolfy2003 the re-route that was used the last 2 years will not be a part of the trail system. I agree it was a nice trail and I also wish it was a part of the trail system.

limey trail 15 will still get you from Sidnaw to Baraga and take you north to Chassell. (hope I spelled that right)

Can you please clarify your first point about trail 8/15 through the gorge being open. Are you referring to the dotted line trail on the attached map?

Fixed image so it shows after board migration

limey, that is correct. it had a washout on the last 2 years but was fixed this summer. that old way will be faster but the long way was a very fast and fun way.would be nice to have either option.

pwolfy2003 is correct. The dotted line is the trail and the 8/15 that is coming south off of trail 12 is no longer the trail. The washout was at "dead mans curve" and has been repaired. the trip from Baraga to Sidnaw is 20 miles shorter by trail then it was the last 2 years with the re-route.

Cheers, and thanks for answering my next question, which was how much shorter does it make the trip. http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/happy/happy0034.gif

It seems trail 14 from Big Bay to L'anse is closed due to logging. It will open soon and I will update when it is open.

Where did you get that info? Trail 14 to Marquette has been rerouted outside of Big Bay, but I believe the trail to L'anse is still the same as last year, according to the Big Bay club site. (bigbay550snowmobileclub.org) If you have questions give Tom a call at the Big Bay Motel, 906-345-9444. He is familiar with the trails there and his wife is the secretary of the club.

Baraga grooms from Anderson's Corner back to L'anse. This is the area that is closed.
As I said it is due to logging. They have a re-route in place and that is the area that is being logged first. As soon as it is done the groomer will groom it. Baraga County Tourist and Convention 906-524-7444

04 renegade - thanks for the info on the trail 109 re-route, hope it does happen next year. Just went through there Friday for the first time after going through the gorge, took a long time to get up to Twin Lakes, seemed like endless swamps. Also was my first time through the gorge - man is that an awesome trail. We stopped at Silver Mtn? lookout and thought about it, but looked like way too many steps to the top.

Thanks to Limey in an earlier St Germain-to-Copper Harbor post about hitting trail 107 and then 8/15, first time I've gone that deep into the UP. Good stuff.

On way back from Houghton Saturday ended up on Trail 15 south from Sidnaw to Iron River. That trail takes forever, lots of twisties, but very scenic. I think sign said 48 miles to Sidnaw when we finally hit RR grade (trail 2) just west of Iron River.
