My wife and I are heading up to the UP for the first time ever without snow on the ground as we are avid snowmobilers and head up a couple times a year. While up there we would like to rent some ATV's and do a little trail riding, we've never ATV'd before so we are looking for recomendations on where to rent from and a nice scenic trail for rookies.

ATV Rentals are available in Watersmeet at Headwaters Polaris, and at Everts in Hancock.
I am only familiar with the close to 1000 miles of ORV Trails in the West End of the UP, of which many were built and maintained by Mi-TRALE.
If you're looking for easier trails to ride in the Mi-TRALE system, I suggest you get a map by going to one of the map advertisers listed on our website; www.mi-trale.org (http://www.mi-trale.org) You will also find on that website how to get a map sent to you.
Once you have a map, then look at riding the IRM Trail, LL Trail, the SB Trail, or the BN Trails. They are the easiest to ride.
The P and E Trails are good trails, but you will find water, mud, and a little more of a challenge.
We have miles of connector trails on the map, some are Preferred Routes where you will ride the shoulder of a highway, others are short trails.
Come on 'UP' and see how beautiful the Western UP is without snow.

If you want to go in the eastern UP call Jeff Ross who owns Winter Haven Motel at Pine Stump Junction. He rents ATV's and there are several nice trails that leave from his doorstep.

We've ben riding the Western U.P. snowmobiling ONLY for the last 24+ years. Usually we ride out of Manitowish Waters in Northern Wisconsin and do a backpack/road trip up to Copper Harbor and back, approx 500 miles 3 1/2 days.
I'm interested in buying a POLARIS RZR (50" wide) or RZR-S (60" wide model) next spring.
Can I do a similar trip with the side/side machine??? Even if I had to start further North like Lake Gogiebic area???, then taking the Bill Nichols trail up to Copper????
I purchased the ATV/ORV atlas a couple of years ago from Headwaters POLARIS, seemed like there were several "gaps" preventing continuous trail riding.
Also, what are the best times of the year to ride, wanted to bring my 6 year old daughter with(if possible) on one of the trips, for a scenic trip
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

The ATV trail only runs up to Calumet, beyond that it is only a snowmobile trail. Bill Nichols runs up to the bridge, you will need to contact the police dept in Houghton to make arrangments for an escort over the bridge. Late summer or fall is a good time to ride, warmer weather less bugs
