Hello

I am from near Pittsburgh, Penna. I have enjoyed riding snowmobiles for the last 15 years in the entire U.P. I am very familiar with the Trail system in the U.P. for snowmobiles. However, I am tossing around the possibility of planning a possible ATV vacation some time next year, either late spring or early summer. I have visited the Michigan DCNR website. However, I am having a hard time finding any info out of state ATVís. Info on trailering my Penna. registered ATV's to the U.P? Do the same rules apply as the sleds? If registered in another state, then that is fine? Also do I need to purchase trail passes like the on the sleds? The areas I am planning to ride are the Keweenaw Peninsula (Mass City/Twin Lakes/Calumet) area for a few days then trailer to Munising/Shingleton to finish out the week.

I normally tour on my sleds, but will not even attempt that on an ATV, just ride to and from area motels. I see MI-TRALE trail maps are for sale from area vendors, so that problem is solved, just need to know about the registration issues?
Also what month would be the best to ride? I know the insects get bad in the summer, that is why I was thinking late spring or early summer? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes, you need a trail permit just like a sled and can get them at the same types of places such as Plutchak's in Mass City.

Trail permits are 16 dollars. Your Penn registration is fine. To avoid the bugs, early spring is best, the bugs are at their worst I would say in June. But I would suggest a late summer or a fall atv ride. An early spring ride may not have a lot of bugs, but summer or fall is prettier. My favorite time of the year to atv up there is fall for sure. Late September or early October.

Check out the "summer time fun on the quads" thread. That was from our July atv trip.

If you're looking for anyone to show you around, go to our Mi-TRALE website and send an e-mail to any of our officers.

We ALWAYS have members that would love to show people the fantastic ATV Trail Network we have in the entire Western UP.
