I am looking to head to the UP of Michigan the middle of January. I have never been snowmobiling there before. I am looking for suggestions on a nice resort I can stay at. I am planning to bring my family of 4 but I want to pick a resort nice enough that if my wife and daughter decide to stay back a day they have stuff to do. I am driving from Minneapolis so the closer the better. Any suggestions ?

The Konteka in White Pine is a great family oriented place that has everything you need. Bowling, restraunt, bar, convenience store, gas, hot tub and sauna

Parkview has a pool, hot tube and sauna, resturant, bar. I always recommend Krupps resort just across the highway but they are more so cabins on a lake, beautiful area but now indoor stuf for the little ones is important.

No dis to Krupps, Mom, don't send richard after me

ps, oh yea, Twinlakes area!

Peppermill Lodging in Rockland has great Lodging. With your rental comes access to a heated shop that is all tooled up for your repairs for not extra cost.

Thanks for the responses everyone. As it turns out it appears as though I am going to be staying a bit closer to home. We are considering going to Hurley WI. Can anyone tell me if they have stayed someplace in or around Hurley. I would be interested in lodging information. I am looking for nice lodging convenient to trails. No smoking is a must.

Also does anyone know the snow condtions there thus far this year ?

Yep better choice for your family if girls staying back but cross over to Ironwood / Bessemer , MI just a few miles (5 or 6) & closer to downhill skiing & shopping & more wholesome than the Hurley,WI activities. Hurley was bar redlight town for loggers 100+ years ago & still a big party town strip joints that sort of thing. Check JD Northwoods Directory or Chamber sites for Ironwood & Bessemer & you will find many hotels/motels, Villas & shopping areas. It's there you just need to do a bit of homework. Will be ton of snow in Jan unless we get a a really severe thaw. Eagle River WI also has everything you need for family fun so you might want to look at that area too. Ladies can walk from motel to town shopping area & visit icecastle, xcountry ski, snowshoe, iceskate just no down hill skiing but plenty of gift shops & clothes shops. If the ladies are not happy nobody is happy.

Hurley is great but not really a family destination site given all the lap dancing bars in town.

You might want to stay a bit further south in Mercer at the Great Northern Motel (http://www.greatnorthernmotel.com/) as they are right on the trail, large car park, and good food. From Mercer, you can ride in all directions and there is generally less traffic. The10-mile stretch of trail from Hurley / Ironwood to Wakefield is one of the busiest trails in the country. If you stay in Mercer, you don't need to ride that stretch of trail.

Yeah, the Great Northern is a nice place to stay. You can have pets too. I don't think that has changed. Always see a lot of kids at that place having fun. Good continental break feast with a nice great room with fireplace. Trail system is great. If you do not purposely ride to the red light district you will not be exposed. Caution, a lot of racer dudes coming around corners fast. The snow depth can drop off fast as you go south out of hurley.
