Just got back from Houghton to Greenland ride starting 12-27 to 12-29-09 and found trail 3 in good condition- not the usual traffic I normally see(normally 200+ sleds per hour) This trip was less than half the traffic there. We rented a sled from Dan's and had a few unfortunate events, but Wildlife Refuge helped and after all, the weekend was a success- no major problems for us (dan's has some engine work probably due to bad gas). Probably use iso-heat for your fill ups around there!
Rode trail 13 to 12 and looped back to the Yooper Lodge on 3 the first night- saw the groomer going towards Greenland on a trail that was already smooth- nothing wrong with that? so nice we did it reverse the next morning after breakfast at Lakeview. We came upon the groomer on 13 in the morning. Rode the Freda loop and snapped a few pics on Lake Superior Shoreline in Redridge- Not much traffic on that loop- no throttle happy nutty drivers riding on the wrong side of turn/trails- thanks (was doing a family trip this time)
Finally rode to Calumet from Houghton and back to Dans. Smooth and a little drifting- Saw the groomer there too! Good food at Michigan House. All trails had a good solid 12" base and about 22" all around, with constant LES snowmachine steady on and off all the time!
Loaded up our two sleds and went back to the camp in Amasa- was just groomed between Amasa and Iron River overnight- couldn't have had better luck- definately needs another 6-12" on the trails there to get a smooth base, since some wet areas and rocks were showing, but good to go riding.(no snirt in corners)
