John,

Can we get Avatars turned on? I understand disabling the signatures but I find having avatars allows for quick recognition. They are size limited it wouldn't clutter up the threads.

Thanks,
Mike

I agree that would be nice

Sorry, but I just want to keep the look of the board as clean as possible and avatars do the exact opposite.

Every post as the username in large type, which for me makes it very recognizable.

I totally disagree. People have lost their "face" recognition. To me it makes the forum a little sterile and boring. There are a lot of personalities on here and the loss of that little personalization is unfortunate. I honestly don't think avatars detract at all from the integrity of the site. And so far a majority of the voters on this poll agree.

Likewise. Very work friendly LOL. Besides, I think it would be too hard to control what some people use. It would be difficult to keep it safe for the family.

Why would it be any more dangerous than posting pictures on the forums? We can do that can't we? We have TOS for a reason. The vast majority of us on here are mature enough to handle this sort of thing and the people that aren't able to are subject to account suspension.

Heck the airline I work for even allows avatars on our work forums.

Have you ever visited other forums? They have TOS too. People have different opinions of what is right and what isn't. We didn't have avatars on the old forum and it wasn't a big deal was it?

We didn't have the ability. The rules are clearly laid out. John runs a pretty tight ship. I don't see it being an issue.

I guess this is a good enough reason....

Seems to me that the name of the website is johndee.com and John has made the decision and we should all respect that decision.

There are many other sites that I will no longer visit because the avatars are out of control.

This is a forum. Forums are for discussion are they not?

Yes, but when the owner of the forum has made it perfectly clear (multiple times) that he does not want avatars, and he explained his reasons (multipe times) do you think it is fair to start polls and continue to badger him about it?

I don't think so.

The poll was started when the thread was started. John does a phenomenal job with the site. It's the best snowmobile site on the web. But the forums are for us. The revenue generated for the site from sponsors and donations from the members here (me included) are directly linked to the number of members.

So I would be surprised if John isn't interested in what the members want. And the best litmus to see what the memberships consensus is is through a poll. Am I wrong?

I'm inclined to agree with JD in that what avatars mostly add is unneeded clutter. That and unless you're going to actually post your picture, an avatar is not much more recognizable than your "User Name". As for myself, I'm not particularly inclined to post my mug shot on da net!

Other than that, it "don't make much differmints" to me, one way or another.

Right, and who started that poll?? Not John, and since he did not start the poll and does not want avatars, the poll is a waste of time.

Sure, polls do give a good idea of what people want, but only if all members participate in the poll. Last I checked, only 19 people voted in the poll. That is hardly a true picture of what the members want.

What would you want your avatar to be if you could have one?

"don't make much differmints" to me,

I love it. Differmints!

I started the poll. As a paying member I will start whatever poll I feel could be beneficial to the site.

You voted so you obviously saw enough value in it to take the time to do it. Thanks.

Probably a pic of my sled. Maybe this one:

But on most forums I use the following:

The old board did not have avatars, so I don't understand why you think people have lost their "face". People can put pictures of themselves in their profile.

I agree. If you want a picture just add it in your profile and then those that choose to look at it can.

Good point! Whats the deal here? Some can "clutter" up the site with their signatures but others cant? Just wondering....

I say we just bring the old board back. Seems to me there was a lot less whining going on when you had a lot less features! The man gave you his answer-----next!
