GREAT NEWS INDEED!! Yes, trail conditions are really great here in Iron County!! And theyare now going to get BETTER!! Last week it became official. The 57 mile loop of trails that connects Crystal Falls west to Iron River and Iron River southeast toward Florence, Wi. and then back north to Crystal Falls has all been added to The State of Michigan A.T.V./O.R.V. program!!! The Chippewa Sno-Kats Trail Club Inc is the trail grant sponsor and now will be able to have the trail graded and maintained with grant funds through the program. Proper signing to identify this as a State Trail will begin next week! This trail also connects with the Mi-Trale trail that heads west out of Iron River to Watersmeet and beyond to Marenisco. This trail also connects with other Mi-Trale trails that head in all directions in the western U.P.! Iron County has also oppened all County roads to A.T.V. riding, so places to go and things to see are nearly limitless!! There are some waterfalls, backroad trails and 2-tracks to explore along the way! Also on this loop are connecting locations to A.T.V. trails in Florence, Wi. When riding through Crystal Falls, watch for the detour around the campground. A snowmobile trail goes through the campground but A.T.V.'s are not allowed. The City of Crystal Falls has provided an approved route along city streets to get around the campground. Watch for the signs, single file as far to the right as possible and at a max. speed of 25m.p.h. This is now truely a great place to ride!! A last item to report on is an error in reporting in some local newspapers. It was reported that an agreement was reached with border counties along the Michigan/Wisconsin border for reciprocity regarding trail permits. With regard to crossing State Lines, Michigan residents with a Michigan trail permit would not have to purchase a Wisconsin trail permit and Wisconsin residents with a Wisconsin trail permit would not have to purchase a Michigan trail permit. THIS IS NOT TRUE!! What was agreed on was that The Iron County Board of Commissioners will petition border counties in Michigan and Wisconsin to see if an interest exists and if a willingness exists to pursue this with State Governments. If this ever came to agreement it could mean a great benefit to the entire business comunity through increased traffic and tourism. For now though, when riding in either State, a trail permit from that State IS REQUIRED! So, spring is here, Riding is Great, and there is no better time to plan a trip to the U.P. and enjoy some Excellent Riding. For additional trail information, maps, on trail lodging, Great Food and refreshments you can always call The Chippewa Resort, located 5 miles west of Crystal Falls on Hwy. U.S. 2 and Trail #16 "The Chippewa Trail" (906) 875-3117. And remember, when you are on the trails, Ride Smart, Side Safe!!
