I'm in. Currently looking at coming out over the Holidays. The place is always busy and it's difficult to ride with Carter because of demand, so might have to ride with someone else. Will also be booking an early March trip as well.

Are you actually going to make it to Haydays this year Carter? Maybe we can find you a dunk tank or something.......

Thanks for the new thread Pat. Now I need to go rummage through the photos to add to this.

Hey, thanks for the new thread. Lets get it big... I'm going to get a complex with all these stuck pix's. Pat, I know you have a few of me not stuck?????? I think!!! Also, for you guys working on a trip plan, remember the process; call the lodge direct, be sure to tell them what guide you want and ask to be put on that guides list for your time, if you are asking for me you call me direct on my cell and I do follow through and make it happen. Kris is right, I get slammed and sometimes too many people in a group. I will not let your trip be affected by that and to get you with a guide with less people. We do have a good group of guides. Some of you know I ride well with 10 guys. Sounds like a lot but the way I run it isn't. Techsledder knows, saw a big group and went small the first day. Rode with me the rest of the trip and loved it.6 or 7 in that group. Also, I will give accurate snow reports. On this thread or call me. I want you here as bad as you want to be here. It's all about the snow. Cell is: 307-690-2053 As for Hay Days, I don't know. Work is slow and timing is everything. If a job pops up and the same timing, I'll stay and work. I'm trying....

Now why would Carter intentionally park his sled under a tree? Not to be outdone, Justin decides he can find a better place to park his guide sled. Boy this sounds like fun about now.......and Pat, who says Cat's can't swim??

I'm going to do a snow report all winter. I'll try to be more specific than " oh my god, or holy crap, or geeeeeeezzzzzz. Riding in 3 ft. of bottomless powder tends to do that to me....LOLOLOLOLOL. I just figured it out, this will be my way at getting back at you guys for all the stuck pix's. I will have good info to. Last year was a learning curve for me all the bad info that got out there. The 3 mile trail out to the turn up to game creek was just trash, and up in game we rode 3 and 4 ft. of fluff. Was it worth coming in early season, **** yes but the info out there made it sound as all was bad. Same thing crossing the road. It was narly the first mile getting up past the ist. ravine. Then we had 2 and 3 ft of pow. and up in the lower hills and rock garden it was 3 and 4 ft. It sure looked bad from the road. I try not to let that bad info happen this year. If I slip you can scream at me on here. One of the best kept secrets is early season riding.. its deep and bottomless to the dirt. Gotta be a little careful and ride with some knowledge. But it is awesome its so deep. Hasn't had a chance to set up. This type of riding will put you to the test and make you a better rider. Right after Cat left it was great riding and fresh snow up top. Lower trails were bad for 4 miles up to 100 mile an hour hill than just fine. Os you gotta believe me when I say it ain't what you see from the highway.....more later...

m8man

carter
10-04-2010, 11:07 AM
Your pilot friend is right on. Or this way, drink water till you pee clear. You guys gotta understand how much you actually work at this vacation. Your body is in a full sweat all day. That translates to how much fluid loss? Got to have the fluid. Next thing is the headaches, the fluid loss causes headaches, actually a dehydration at altitude headache.. do the water and the thing goes away. So, headache, do the water, spots, do the water, altitude, do the water, or pee clear....

m8man

Actually, with all the fun I had from last October through May with fluid build up and other assorted issues due to the heart surgery, I sure learned a lot about the body and fluids. Basically, a healthy body will self regulate fluids, so drinking a lot of water in advance of going out west is only going to make you have to pee a ton here in the flatlands.

The best thing you can do in advance of going out west is cardio exercise. Hit the treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster, what ever, but get that heart rate up and keep it up for at least 30 minutes a day. This should be started months before going out west, not weeks.

Once out there, then drink tons of fluids. You really cannot over do it. Somewhere on the order of 5-6 liters a day is a good starting point, but more can be needed by some. Drink mainly water, but sports drinks are good too as they replenish your electrolytes. Another one that is good, but can be hard to follow while on vacation is to avoid alcohol and caffeine as both will dehydrate you.

Carter is right on with the pee color. Clear is good, the darker the yellow, the worse off you are.

Folks might want to read up on AMS (https://health.google.com/health/ref/Acute+mountain+sickness). Not trying to scare anyone off, but it's all good knowledge to have on hand so that you can differentiate between a mild case of AMS and severe case.

Cardio....for sure!!!!if you never been to the Mts you will be shocked at how you cant breath!!!!!

the biggest reason i quite smoking ciggs is I was at 10,000ft and was having tuff time getting my breath...I went home a quite smoking!!!!!!still cant breath at 10,000 hahahha

I will add this.....We took a guy with us few years back to Tog and Dave was in great shape!!body builder, roofer and 25 years old!!!!!!the only time I ever seen some one get mountain sickness he turned pure white half way thru the day and if it wasn't for Carter noticing it we might be less one friend as he kept going and never said a word, he was to tuff to believe he was getting sick!!!!!!we headed down off the mt and Dave felt better after time at sea level!!!scary stuff

The first time we went to Tog my brother and I were beyond excited, like two kids Christmas morning, x's a billion. We checked in, grabbed all our gear and starting running up the stairs in the lodge to get to our room. Holy crap, we were completly exhausted by the time we got to the top of the stairs! LOL. Skylar, same here on first time at Tog. Made 3/4 way up steps and had to sit down. I started laughing, thinking this is all I got? By morning I was fine. Pace yourself out there and take breaks. I have taken my young buck employees out there and they fair the worst. Smokers suffer big time. I have had 25 yr. Old smokers cash in early while this 50 yr. Old non smoker rides circle around them. Needless to say that does not make them happy. Hydration and pink lungs is key.

Hey Carter, thanks for the update. I spoke with a buddy out in Grand Lake, Co. the other day and he said the mountain behind his house has at least a 10 inch base starting about mid way up the mountain. Still no snow in the valleys but its a great start!!!!! Doo Dr., about the conditions report, there will be no teasing period. Last year we had guys putting bad info on the net. I won't do that. It's important to everyone what is going on here so people can plan trips. Don't care if they choose another riding area as long as they know the real poop here at Togwotee Mountain. Last year we had a bad trail system early on and up high 4-5 ft of powder. The damage was done with this guys bad report. Not this year... And so it goes... no new snow to report, going to cloud up and rain and snow Sat, and Sun. More later...

I have not doubt that you will give us a honest report because you are one of the few that ride what you call so we can not second guess you. Yes on riding a Polaris. The fleet this year is 800 RMK's. That is ok with me cuz I don't like the Protaper bars. I already have shocks to replace the stock ones with. Looks like a good sled. One problem I spotted is the tin plate between the footrest and the back of the secondary clutch. Lots of open space for cooling and snow on the clutch. Wet spinning. Working on a fix as we speak...

Tough talk, till you get there. Carter and I was there, I shot the video. Carter was the leader. I was the last in on the idea. "The don't know" was far tougher than "Drag race hill" or "widow maker" going down it was pure doom. The Pro's shooting the videos fail to show the crashes and have unlimited amounts of sleds to go through. skylar, you and I don't have those options. Things change dramatically when at the top looking down and more so on the way down.

Carter, Is Jerry Bell still around there somewhere? Had a blast years ago with Jerry as our guide and then after dinner going for a ride in his snowcat Christie with a 12pack of beer and a bottle of Schnapps. All this after we had spent our full allotment of time at happy hour sucking down "free" drinks.

Boy does that put a date on you....Jerry Bell is working for Wyoming Park and Rec. I'm not sure what he does in summer but the winter has him traveling all over Wyoming building and staking trails in winter. He lives in Riverton. I see him all the time at Togwotee. He's happy...He had enough of the physical part of guiding. He rides on his days off. he spends his work time on a sled so he hasn't left it all together...

Yes, that was my Burb....Onefastcat, come now....ok, here it is... at 10,000ft we have at least 5 ft of snow/base. The big storm that was supposed to be here this weekend missed. We got maybe5in. But the warm weather and little bit of rain created base. On top of it is 10 in of powder.Very gooooooooooood riding, and I only rode in one spot...The CD trail out from the lodge is covered, no rocks and dirt like last year, heck we had dirt til mid Jan....I am not a trail rider as you all know but in early season we gotta use them to move around. Firecatguy is going to post the 9 pix. we took, just a taste, no cursing...really, conditions right now are very good. We are expecting a storm for the next 2 days and if it happens plus the cold behind it we will have primo powder. So the season is off to a bang, a good one...So you know, the storm that missed went to Island Park. I hear they are under tons of fresh...

I have found that using the excuse of the "kids can't cuz" is about something else. Back a few years ago I had a family here and their son, then 8 years old was on a Phazer. He could go anywhere we all went. Yes he had to be watched but they quickly found out that was my job and I am good at it. Then there is the Douglas Family from COLO., their 12 year old son was on a 800 polaris. Way too much sled for a young boy. WRONG....he could ride then and you should see him now...Then there's Riley.....10 or 11 when he first came. Dad bought him a new Phazer a couple years ago...I could see the struggle he was having and put him on my700 polaris RMK guide sled. Then he rode my polaris 700 RMK 163 tuned rocket. His dad was so mad at me, he saw the difference in his riding and new the phazer had to go away. He's on a 600rmk155 and that young man is a mountain rider. He isn't stupid, he rides with all kinds of caution and care, some thing that is rare in young people. He hates to lead and I make him do it all the time. Moral to the story, is its up to you and your children. They are so much fun to watch and ride with when they are taught right. Hello dad, bring them ...... as for conditions today, I give up....expecting 18 inches by Wed. am in town. Elevation got 20 inches over the weekend and Togwotee had 6 in new as Derek drove to work yesterday over Tog. pass. It's here with a bang... more later...

Well said Carter. My buddy Joe has a 14 year old son, he started riding when he was around 10-11. His first ride was a 98 XC700, one of Joe's old sleds that he still had. He is now on Joe's old 02 RMK 700 144x2. His first trip with us to the U.P. was April of 2007. That week 60" fell between Tuesday, and Saturday. One heck of a first rip for the lad. Anyways, even though he is only 14, he has been riding for quite sometime now, and does not ride over his head, and listens to what we tell him, even though he does throw in the occasional "yea, I know". :) This year he will be making his first trip out west with us, the Snowies in January. He attended the avy class swith us last week, and was full of questions on the way home.

As far as people saying kids shouldn't be on a 600, 700, 800, whatever, it depends on the kid. I forgot to mention he is a farm boy, there really isn't much he hasn't driven! LOL.

The first pic was March of 07 when he was 11, and the second one was in Dec of 09 when he was 13. The last one is what 13 year olds do when they are told to wash the mold release off the new belt. LOL.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have every intention of getting out there, I'm still working it out. I ran into problems with rentals and his age. My son... is quite the rider ( I must say ) . Carter & Wayne you guy's will like him, he is polite, respectful, humble and honestly a better / safer rider than me. He is agile & quick and I have spent 6 years grooming him. My 40+ to 50+ year old buddies " love him " and they all have complimented me on how well he rides. They admire his " respect for the machine " . Honestly he is a better rider than myself, not to mention exhibits none of my charcter defects. ( that would be good ). We are coming, I guess I will have to drive a sled out there or can I rent 1 for him ? I couldn't in years past, I even offered the rental guy's cash up front for his rental , like 10k with the explanation if he wrecks it I would buy the sled on the spot .... but they wouldn't budge. Wayne keep in touch, one way or another i'm going to work this out. Carter we are going to look you up and request you as a guide when we come. I better stop smoking and get preparred to start digging sleds out now. I'm working on this.....

Also, give me more info on him, size sled he can ride, what brand, I might be able to find a rental in town...or you find one in town and give it to him. There are ways to do this...more later...

Carter, I wanted to chew on this a little before I replied. I have 3 kids coming ( they all are in agreement ) 2 daughters & my son. . I would prefer to fly , rent 3 from TOG and we will ship my buddy's sled from Boulder for the event. I thought we would ship all our gear ahead of time UPS RED, then me and my motley crew fly out, ride for 3 days and fly back. That is the best I can come up with, I'm thinking we not going to be wearing the orange bubble face helmets, my daughters would revolt. My kids can ride, they have all been at it since 4-5 yrs old. Things get complicated since my daughters think they are better than my son, however I can tell you that is not so. Jessica rolled the F6 3X last year thinking she was as good as Matt. Sara likes to stick them in the trees , sink them in the lakes and miss turns, Matt only catches rentals on fire and burns down motors ! STILL WANT TO BE OUR GUIDE ??? Additionally, I have a long laundry list charcter defects . Feel free to wear your colored bra , kids will love it. Do you have a guide schedule that shows when your available ? I'm thinking we will come to ride during the week fly SAT or SUN ride M-T-W-TH-F ???? depends on your availability then fly back, after our DEC 25- Jan 1 trip to the western UP. JAN - FEB ? As far as my son, he has had a POO 600RR for the last 3 years , put about 7800 miles on it ( trail riding ). Also can ride my SD 800R, and I just bought him another racer 07 800 XRS from a good buddy, ALL the kids are good on 800's or 600's they have been trained to " have respect for the machine ". All can follow directions, all are respectful to the sport & to other peoples belongings. I will let you " chew" on this info for a while. Another thought, I might try to round up 1 of the kids friends to bring with, ( a snowmobilier ) an extra grand I don't have a problem with, let me check on air fare ect... that may complicate things . Additionally, if you have a family as you mentioned above with kids around the same ages , that have a trip scheduled with you as the guide, we can consider getting there / making plans for the same days. My kids would love that. 1 more thing WE have no mountian riding skills ! We will need a leader.
Please consider. Sorry for the essay.

Wayne, let Me & Matt get some skills under our belt in the mountains. I spent about 1hr 15 min talking with Carter about our trip. Then as time goes on we would love to start tagging along with some of your trips. Even talked with Carter about storing a couple of M sleds out there in the future. I think we will want to develope some skills & learn a little and start making this part of our winter program. Spent another 1.5 hrs looking at You Tube videos about riding out west. I have been wanting to do this for 4-5 years, now is the time to start. We are going to rent the new POO 155's , Carter said there pretty sweet.

Any info on rental prices @TOG for the 800 POO PMK's per day when doing the " all inclusive " package. They say you get a discount , just curious, I'm trying to put numbers together. I could'nt get anyone on the horn when I called today. I estimating 250 per day ?

Any word from Brett A. & Jack yet, last time I spoke with them, they said the time between Christmas and New Years worked best for them.

$250.00 is a pretty close guess per day for a 800 Rmk 155" with a beacon & insurance.

Anybody wondering if they have snow in tog, here some pic of trip over thanksgiving.
Talk too ranger up there, who has been there for 30 years, never seen this much snow so early,
100" so far this winter, and anybody who has not rode in this much snow, you can watch
all the video you want, it won't help, you have too ride in it and after you get stuck a
gazzillion time you will learn.
But that a part of ridding out west everybody gets stuck or your not having fun!!!!!

Think Snow!!!!

My guess would be either AC or Polaris is shooting some marketing material.

I can remember seeing a heli there in December in previous years and that is what it turned out to be.

Hopefully not search and rescue, but I would imagine they would keep that at the airport in the valley. Less chance of it getting grounded by weather than up on the mountain.

Wouldn't it be nice to fly in there via heli from the Midwest?!

Yes, it was Arctic Cat doing a shoot. I was up there for the week and could not get to a computer. So,......while I was there it snowed. About 3 ft. Conditions are so good right now that its hard to explain. Its cloudy and overcast most of the time due to constant snowing but thats a good thing. Sat. I rode in 3 plus feet of Wyoming dry powder. WOW!!!!! So we have winter. All the willows in muscrate flats are gone or covered, all the willows in Split Rock are gone. For those that don't know names of areas ask but you get the Idea. Not rubbing it in just stating facts and conditions. Merry Christmas to all have a great riding year wherever you are and I'll talk again tomorrow. Mini Gorilla; What's this about the check engine light?, your dad's sled had problems?
I drove my sled into several creek bottoms, the only light I had come on was that darn fuel light about mid day, every day.
If you recall, I caught you trying to shut the ole'(Carter)mans sled off first, then snuck in and got that red button, you still have alot to learn young grasshopper/mini gorilla. I wish they had the sleds they have now when I was young.
It would be great to hook up and ride again.

Carter; Get that new motor yet? Was it a crank bearing?

Mini Gorilla; What's this about the check engine light?, your dad's sled had problems?
I drove my sled into several creek bottoms, the only light I had come on was that darn fuel light about mid day, every day.
If you recall, I caught you trying to shut the ole'(Carter)mans sled off first, then snuck in and got that red button, you still have alot to learn young grasshopper/mini gorilla. I wish they had the sleds they have now when I was young.
It would be great to hook up and ride again.
L8r, Al

Riley and his pops are blast to ride with.......I think carter said it was the oil line

You have a XP summit? My fuel gauge has never worked properly. The light will come on when it wants to. POS electronics in these things. Just last week, a new feature showed up... the gauge cluster lighting up like a Christmas tree and the Tach and Speedometer pegging at idle. Works fine while underway though...

Al,Riley and Frank; it was great to meet you and ride with you. We had an excellent time. Maybe we will get a chance to ride together again.

Paul; Al didn't have a technical issue, he had a throttle (pinned) and therefore a gas issue. Most of the time my sled is the first one to be low or run out of gas. Not this time, Al wins!

Riley; when I chimed in, I didn't want you to think it was some kind of slam. Hope to ride with you & your pops again, I'll try to keep up as long as I don't run out of fuel. L8r, Al in Iowa

So, I rode 14 days straight, and got tired. Day off, and I spend it on the computer. Nope, went riding with friends. The update is it won't quit snowing. last week got over 3 ft. of it. Parking lot races were great. Next chance for sun is Wed. That means more snow. I think I tracked up 2 meadows last week. On a serious note, the conditions could not be better. When you ride an area and go back 2 days later and there are no tracks, well you get the Idea..more later....

Trees today with a group that thinks perhaps I can't ride.....more on that later. The place is rocking and the riding is good. Gotta go hunting. The new snow will fresh up everything. Good stuff....

I'm having a year this year. The personal sled now has a bad PTO crank bearing. So I was on a red 800 that just got a new motor. Ran great. Today I'm back on my guide sled with its 3rd new motor. I'm hoping for the best. When this sled is running its the greatest sled I've ever ridden. We got new snow. In the yard 5 in. and on top of game at least 10. Felt like 15. Really good pow. day yesterday. And yes Pat, 1-b is still open. Everyone enjoy the game and more later. The conditions here are just plain AWESOME...........

First day back on the guide sled and it rocks. The problem was a defective head sent from Polaris for motor # 2. Motor #1 was lower main bearing failure. motor # 3 was fried parts and settings. Its all back together and its all good. As for the snow.........the last 2 days I've been in face shot snow. 16 in. on sunday and a storm on Monday produced another 12 in. This is Feb. powder riding. kinda like the best there is riding, creates a reaction in my loins riding... oh, you get the picture. Come one come all to the greatest show on snow......

Our count down is 9 days before we are graced with your presence. We may have an unbelievable surprise for you Carter (cutting it close on getting the project done). Even if we don't get it done I'm sure we'll still have fun digging out Hollywood and Peterson. With the new track on the Super charged Nytro I dont think Hollywood will keep up but I bet he is going to try real hard!!! The girls could care less about the "unit" extentions. They all have new sleds to do some carving with you.

Carter that is an understatement....

Just returned from 5 days of riding.... The conditions were excellent and for the second year in a row Carter made the trip a blast for myself, Techsledder and a couple buddies. Also, rode couple days with Firecatguy and his crew and had a blast. Had a lot of great riding, never been in bottomless snow like this before. Last year Carter had to search hard for good snow but didn't disappoint. This year no problem finding the snow, and it never stops amazing me how he can guide 8 guys into the bush all with varying riding abilities and challenge us all. If you are willing to learn, he will teach you. While the corporate part of TML may have some hiccups, Carter goes out of his way to make sure you have a first class experience on your sled. When one of our guys thought his Poo might run better on diesel instead of gas, Carter found away with the shop to get him on the snow with little delay to our group and we got our full day of riding in. While we all had a good laugh on this mishap, Carter made sure my buddy didn't get too down on himself. I believe the important part to Carter was that my buddy made sure he left after a week of riding thinking this is the greatest place ever.....and he did.

Thanks again Carter and see you again next year. Bill.
