Was driving around hay field the other day and our 1997 polaris indy trail touring with a 488 fan cooled motor quite running. Brought it in garage and did a compression test on one cylinder had 30#s and the other had 110#. Took the head off and found the piston to be scored. Not sure of where to go from here. Can we hone the cylinder or can it be resleved??? Probally went farther than we should have with this, but seems pretty easy and we enjoy doing this kinda stuff. Any thoughts.

Any idea on why your piston became frightened to begin with? I would have to believe there are about 9000 488 jugs for sale on any Pol related website. They made the things for about 20 years. You would be better off getting a used one rather than begin the process of fixing your trashed one.

You can fix it easily. You will first have to remove the aluminum from the cylinder walls with miratic acid. Then hone them. After the repair you will need to determine why it scored. Check your carbs for blockage.

A pick of the piston and cylinder would be very helpful. Depends on which side was scored as to what the problem might be. But I would suspect dirty carbs so make sure to clean them good and new gas when you get it back together.....which side went down anyways??..how was your fan belt, and does your fan spin free??
