Do you know if you can make the ride all the way up to Copper, or does the trail still end around Calumet???

Skip Schultz was kind enough to send me a map about a year ago. Are there any significant changes in the Western U.P.??

My daughter rides a POLARIS 170 RZR, what is the minimum age for her to drive it on the trails??

Thanks

"Mi-Trale will be printing new maps this spring they should be ready in April "

Hopefully, Skip can add the approximately 135 miles of new trails as just announced by the Forest Service. It also would be nice to have the trails/loop from Iron River to Crystal and on to Iron Mountain.

Information from the Keweenaw ATV Club letter solicitating advertisers for the map coming this spring. I have it in front of me....

The Keweenaw ATV Trail is open from Calumet to Copper Harbor

It is through the generosity and trust of private individuals, land trusts and corporate entities that we have been granted the privilege of crossing their property. This privilege may be revoked at any time.

We beg ATV riders to respect all trails and remain on designated trails at all times.

It will officially designated as a State trail in the spring.

GREAT, hope to do that ride this Spring/Fall.

I'd like to start in around Presque Isle, up to Copper, and back down past Bond Falls, IF that's possible???????

Hey Fish , how is it? LOL That Nytro, always breaking stuff. You think you can get a little more time off this summer like 2 days? So we can go on this trip.

P.S. I miss riding my dirt bike. Also miss how cheap it is! The old 99 Powder Special is a gas/oil pig.

Ranlam,
all is good. Was thinking about studding the tires on the kdx and coming up for a ride.We could call ourselves a "team".Taking on the injustices of the professional trail racers, running on sea and snow, settling the hand signal debate etc.what do you think?

No cabin in PI,I'm a few miles south of Hurley.

I'm in!!! I'll be sure to bring extra tubes and my tire irons so I can change them on the trail!! LOL Might wanna plan a little extra time in for the tube changes, altho I'm pretty good at it.

I think we should get a plan come spring time and do this, sounds like a blast to me. Any idea how many miles it would be??

ranlam

Plus a tube repair kit, for when nytro pinches a tube. LOL

I'm guessing mileage would be the same as snowmobiles for the trails are basically the same. 300 round trip? Always wanted to do Brockway Mountain Drive on my trail bike.

fish, I'll PM ya soon for addy to send some maps to, I have some at the house.

Lets see, we should do this on a three day weekend right? Mem day or the 4th or should we just use a reg. weekend? List of things I got to do: brakes, swing arm bearing, oil change and I am good to go. Where we gonna stay, out in nature by the beach or cozied up to a bar? I'll talk to our buddy Kraig hes done this trip many times with jeep, but he has a ktm 300 now. So maybe he can make it also. Or at least give us some info.

fish633
01-25-2011, 01:33 PM
If it works out with the others I would do during a weeks vac. With that in mind,a Sat-Mon will be best. The month is pretty much open.A friend of mine who rides a four wheeler(I know lets not go there for now)would probably join us.He can carry our stuff!!!Camp out would be cool except for the amount of gear could be a hassle.

ranlam
01-25-2011, 02:24 PM
Gear! Well just start a fire and drink our selfs to sleep! LOL But seriously it wouldnt take much gear for me. I might know someone who has a jeep.

nytro_rtx
01-25-2011, 03:36 PM
It would be cool to just pull up to the beach for the night, but if we had a room we wouldn't need any extra gear for the night. I would be game either way, I just wanna ride!!
I would think leaving on a Saturday morning and coming back to W.P. on Sunday would work the best, but whatever works for you guys I'll make work for me.
nytro
p.s. maybe I should bring the KX 5 for this ride!!

fish633
01-25-2011, 04:36 PM
I think you should just give me the k5,i mean with your age and all I really do not want to see you get hurt or something.Anyway lime green with a blue mohawk is totally out of style

ranlam
01-25-2011, 04:49 PM
Saturday to Sunday for sure. A room would be alot easier. I know, get a room next to the beach with a bar.
I'm cool either way.
Did ya get that monster running? That would be a blast.
You'll have to still Kirks helmet!
Very intrested to see this new map. Can we get to Gay and take that scenic shoreline route?

nytro_rtx
01-27-2011, 10:10 AM
Ranlam,
Yea I think a room would work out a lil better also. A bar will be a must for the evening!!! Either works for me also.
I have a couple other projects goin but that goes on the bench next and I don't think it will be a major problem, hopefully just something in the shifter assembly. I will definantly have it UP to do some ridin in the UP, also plan to bring the 450 UP for a weekend too.
Yea I might have to steel Kirk's helmet when I bring the KX 5 UP!! lol
Fish,
I'll be OK on the KX 5, I put a throttle stop on it so it will just come off idle!!
I was always a lil off on style so it all fits together well. LOL
check your P.M.'s & send me your addy and I'll get a map out to you.

I'll go with the room idea also.Hot shower and hot food will go good after that kind of mileage.
Say up in Copper Harbor?

ranlam
01-27-2011, 02:57 PM
Copper Harbor for sure. Lets get a place and date established shall we gents. I think the place is called the Mariner? I am open for dates.

fish633
01-27-2011, 03:16 PM
June is good, days are getting longer and temps are cooler, still a bit rainy early in the month.
Early July is o.k. but later in the month can be hot humid and real dusty.
August would be least favorable.
Sept.temps are good, rain can be problem, days get short.
Oct.every thing will either be perfect or a total washout.
I am going to be out west for a couple weeks in June as well so I'll have to plan around that.
If you get a chance check out A.D. Boivin explorer kits for dirtbikes.Looks like a riot to me

ranlam
01-27-2011, 03:30 PM
May 28,29 if the weather is good? Otherwise Fish you'll have to pick the date cause nytro and I will work it in.
I looked into them explorer kits, definatly want a 60+ HP machine, looks like a total blast though.

On our annual ATV trip this year, our group will be leaving L'Anse "early" July 28th and returning late on the 30th from Copper Harbor. Stops along the way, to name a few are The Pasty corner-Iron River, Henrys-Rockland, Slims- Mohawk, Mariner North- Copper Harbor. We camp out in tents along the way, maybe Twin Lakes SP for showers one night. Maybe stay at campground by Gay another night? Depends on how far we travel in a day! Will be nice to get the new Mi-Trale Maps. The ones I have are getting a little worn out!!! The new trail from Sidnaw to Iron River will be a great for making a loop on the IRM-SB trails. Also will be nice to see what Baraga Co. will have for trails. I think now that the ball is rolling they will have some good ones. It all takes time. Skip does a great job getting trails. Make sure you get out this year and get the Mi-Trale "CP2R" award. It's really not that hard.

ranlam
01-28-2011, 01:47 PM
hemicoupe...you guys sure put on the miles. We always say were gonna get the CP2R award but never get down to ride IRM trail. Pretty much ride everything else. Were always to busy off roading and exploring. We should do it just for the clubs sake though, oh and our pride! Not to mention the cool award itself. I'm just glad we got the good folks at MI-TRALE doing what they can to make our sport grow.

nytro_rtx
01-28-2011, 03:21 PM
Ranlam, we need to get the CP2R award this year, because like ya said we already ride all the trail but the IRM trail and that would be some new ground for us to explore. We could just putem in the truck & go down to Marinesco and go from there. we'll have to get a plan for this a lil closer to sping and do it.
nytro
P.S. May 28-29 should work for me too.

I need to get a keweenaw map next. Are you thinking of running the pioneer to nichol to calumet then connecting with katv trails north of there? 10 am might be a few hours too late to make copper harbor. The freda loop would be something to check out on the way up or back.

ranlam
02-01-2011, 12:46 PM
We can leave by 8est. if you want. I figured 10 would give us enough time, from here to Houghton is 3 hours and C.H. is around another 1.5-2 hours past that. But I did not figure in any exploring time so yeah the earlier we leave the better. The BN trail is what i figured to Calumet then I dont know if its the same as snowmobile trail or not. Did the new maps come in yet?

fish633
02-01-2011, 01:29 PM

New stuff we will be adding are Baraga co and Marquette co and hopefully some Timber trails on State if we get them GPS's and approved. I will let you know when we get a print date. Sorry I have not been on John Dee for a long time. The computer picked up a serious virus and had to be basically re-built. Then I find out that I lost all my current Mi-TRALE e-mail update addresses.

At least I got through the 125+ e-mails, and now checked on John Dee.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. 20+ years of working on ATV Trails with both TRALE-UP and Mi-TRALE, its good to know some care about what goes into getting the trail system that Mi-TRALE now has.

As far as the new maps, we are currently working on filling up the advertising spots, and as posted we are going to add the Preferred Routes in Baraga and Marquette County.

Now the bad news, once again the Eastern USFS Forester upheld the appeal by a couple people, so we did not get the OHV Connector Trails in the Ottawa NF. This has been a 7 year process and to be honest with you, it is real disheartening.

However Mi-TRALE is now going to focus on building new trails on portions of the Copper Country State Forest, which is managed by the Michigan DNR. The Michigan DNR has been EXCELLENT for Mi-TRALE to work with. We just have to find some people, in good physical shape, to go out and GPS/mark some proposed new trails. Then we propose it the DNR and wait for an answer.

No matter what, Mi-TRALE has come from having 0 miles of trails in 2001, to over 500 SIGNED/MARKED trails and another 500 of unsigned and marked trails.

On the weekend of May 14th-15th, Mi-TRALE members will be out brushing and signing the trails. We will have many of the old signs replaced with much nicer looking signs, plus we'll get the posts to b e upright.

All the signing, and mapping is done through Mi-TRALE membership. This year we are hoping to top 100 paid members for the first time since 2003. Please renew or become a new Mi-TRALE member.

Thanks everyone, YOU'RE THE GREATEST!

Mi-TRALE has a GREAT number of people that do so much. I am so proud to be associated with such an excellent organization...from our members to our board to our officers.

All I can hope for now is to get members to renew and to get new members. As everyone knows, numbers play an important part. Especially in legislation.

Then we need map advertisers to replace the many business's that are no longer in business.

Thanks again everyone!
