I was looking at one of the Polaris Rzr 800. It's 50" wide so that it's legal to ride on MI trails. I thought this might be a nice toy for the lady and I. Also, it seems it would be good to haul my 12ft boat on the trailer or just simply go off on a 2 track in the middle of nowhere.

I was leaning toward getting 2 atvs but thought this would be a nice alternative.

Does anyone have one of these?

I was in WY this past summer dirt biking and the lodge we stayed at rented them, it was the basic unit but still looked fun so I rented one. I had a freeking blast, it crawls, its pretty fast, 64 on the highway because you can in WY, and the power steering made getting through the crap easy. it used the same about of gas as the other atvs and had pretty good storage. I'm looking at getting one as well and I think the S model is the way to go, better/bigger tires and rims and some other nic nacs. I really liked it

I have a 2009 RZR s. We kept both of our ATV's so I could have one for plowing here in Pewaukee and one for plowing in Minocqua at our cottage. The RZR has been great all around. There are more and more places to ride in Wisconsin in the last year or so. I have mine registered as an ATV so I can ride WI trails that are allowing them to run. The 60" width is very stable - I have never riden a standard rzr at 50" so I can't compare. There are so many cutomizations out there now for them you can go broke easily. If you have specific questions, let me know.

landoman,

we have a cabin in Manitowish waters, where do you ride around there, so far I've only rode the pioneer trail out of bergland and up to rockland, I also know they have alot of trails around hurley and mercer

We typically head north and drop in Mercer. There are a days worth of trails around there with a few stops here and there. Most follow the snowmobile trails. You can also get through into Michigan. We also ride south in Harrison Hills. I am hoping that the townships around our place get it worked out to allow ATV's and UTV's on the town roads. Our hunting land is in Clark county where in 2011 they are planning to allow UTV's on some trails.

bought a 2009 last summer put over 700 miles on it in up. it is a lot of fun, but not the same as normal atv riding, wifey likes her own snowmobile but is very happy riding shotgun in the razor. it's a fun way to get around in the summer.

I'm going to go test drive one with her to make sure that we can fit. The 50" model lol.

Honda East has the regular model (not the S) for $10,200 but I think with a little persuasion I can get it for that out the door or less.

I have an 08 standard RZR 50" width. We bought it for the wife and kids so she would not have the sore arms from steering the atv. We love it. It is stable and the nice thing is it is totally trail legal and can go anywhere an atv can. The newer ones are a little nicer as they have a pocket for your heal for your throttle foot. I do not know if they upgraded the spring for the throttle but I know they make a stiffer spring. When going over bumps you can get it to be a little jumpy as the throttle is easy to push, that's why they have an aftermarket stiffer spring.
With the right tires it goes through just about anything. We have the maxxis big horns on ours and it does not get stuck with the 4 wheel drive and the posi rear end. unless you bank it on the bottom. I can get through 1-2 feet of snow with no problem. Mud be prepaired to get dirty they do through the stuff.

Hope this helps,
Matt

How would it work for ice fishing or hunting? I'm thinking of a quad but think I would like this better.

Ice fishing is great for us. I have yet to have it stuck on the ice but I am sure that is inevitable. I don't use it for hunting. You could but with the rzr s the way the roll cage comes down the back limits you a bit in what you can haul. Atv works better for me for hunting. I have it all loaded up for fishing now. Heading out on minocqua for a little fishing and to watch the radar runs.

All the side by sides are lots of fun. Take a trip to Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan and you will be hooked for life. There are so many after market parts and accessories for all the side x sides. Check out Glamis.net , this is the John Dee web of the sand world. This business makes snowmobiles look like matchbox cars. Everyone in Southern Cal and surrounding states owns 1 or 2 in there house like we own snowmobiles. There are even conversions to drop a Apex/R-1 motor then turbo these puppies. Can you imagine 300hp out of Razor? There only limitation is the wheelbase.

Depends on the trail, some will be legal to ride on @ that width and some won't be. Send Skip Schultz(sp??) a message, he will know where there legal and not. The MiTrale map might even tell ya if ya have 1.

Do yourself a favor and test ride a Commander before you buy.

My bud is a Die Hard Ski-Doo guy, took one for a test ride at a local dealer over an obstacle course, said it doesn't steer for $hit and is top heavy and "tippy" in the turns

Read any forum out there, it may be fast in a drag race but that's about it.

Now that POLARIS has unleashed the NEW RZR XP on Jan 1, that is the new leader of the pack.

58.6" ---That width is no problem in the UP. It is an ORV and you will be legal on all ORV trails. The only place I can think where you might have a problem is single track trails that were converted to atv trails.

I'm sure there are other areas, but living in Marquette county, the only area I would run into SLIGHT trouble would be heading east through Hiawatha Forest area, where the trail is limited by a gate, to 50" width I believe, but there are even more logging roads and grades to go around that it isn't that bad. Not to get on this rant but most of the snowmobile trails are even open to the UTV/atv, except for some areas gated here and there.

jr37, I have been a Prowler owner for the past 3 years & have to say I absolutely love it. It is 60" wide, very comfortable for driver & passanger & I have had no issues with it's width on the trails here in the UP. I have been able to go most anywhere the ATV's go. I recently upgraded from my 2008 Prowler XT650 to the new Prowler HDX 700 efi. It is the same width, however, it has a longer wheel base than the traditional Prowler which smooths out the bumps nicely. It has a larger cargo dump box which can handle up to 1500 lbs of cargo, this can also be converted to a flat bed if needed or desired. It has a bench seat as opposed to the buckets which is nice for 3 people, definetly comfortable for 2 adults & a child in the middle. 4 wheel disc brakes, Electronic Power Steering (EPS) which is something I would have never thought was missing, but, I wouldn't have one without it anymore. Tilt wheel, Fox Float with coil-over rear shocks-sweet! You can't beat the amount of storage space with a Prowler either, up front, under the hood, you have a 25lb capacity storage area that can be used as a huge cooler as the bin is duck-billed for drainage plus storage compartments on the left & right sides of the unit. I use mine for plowing snow in the winter & it pushes like a bulldozer. Summer is fun time most anywhere around here, main trails, secondary trails, logging roads etc.... The side by side is a blast, it is different than your typical ATV, but, it is a nice different, for work or play, I won't have anything else, especially when you want to take family & friends along for some fun. BTW, this is my second Prowler from Chad @ M&M Powersports, I couldn't be happier with the product or the service.-Mezz

The major thing for me is reliabiliity. That's why I own a Honda. My Cats have been pretty good to me. John Deere has a very good reputation. That's why I ask about those two machines. I really don't think I would consider any thing else. The Big Red is too big. It will be mainly a work machine, but will need to play once in a while.

Mezz, any maintenance issues or brake downs?

No maintanence issues or break downs in the 3 years I have owned one. It's been very reliable for me & I don't believe you will find a more comfortable ride. Though John Deere does make a fine product, it is still very utility oriented & the Prowlers ride doesn't even compare to a Gator. It is a very versatile unit that can handle most any work load & still give you the fun factor when it's play time & like I stated earlier, plenty of room with alot of storage.-Mezz

I decided to take the plunge on the Rzr. I bought the 800 standard model.

Honda East had it for $9899 before taxes. Polaris just came out with the $300 rebate and they tacked it on to their already lower price.

I bought the extended warranty that makes it a total of 4 years for an extra $1000.

I'm doing the 3 year payment plan at a 3.99% interest rate.

The total was somewhere around $11,700.

I called many dealerships from here to Wetmore. The only dealer that came close was Monroe Motorsports.

Unbelievable. I sent an email out to another dealer over the weekend, but he's 4 hours away south. I spoke with him today and he is actually going to give me a 60 month warranty with a $25 deductible that I can use anywhere. It doesn't even have to be a Polaris dealer.

The cost is $11,431 out the door and they'll deliver it!

I guess that I'm going to go with this one.

That's saving me $250 and I get an extra year warranty.

We haven't had any issues with the wifes RZR that weren't caused by us(well me) and we have about 1500 miles on it. We run it thru anything, snow, seat deep water(will go deeper when I getthe snorkle kit), as deep of mud we can until it's stuck and the only thing I have found while tearing apart to do main. is the front right axle seal is leaking. Most of our riding is in the UP with a little at home.

i would be carefull purchasing non polaris extended warranty. Alot of store's won't do after market warranty work because in the fine print they screw the customer and the dealer. I run three powersport stores in the u.p. and polaris is the way to go in the long run.

I ended up going with the other dealer that has the Polaris warranty for what you mentioned above. It saved me $6 now but the deductible was higher. I just don't want to break down in the UP and have to take it here and there to get work done.

My family owns a 2007 ranger xp 700 and we absolutely love it we use it for plowing in the winter and so far nothing has stopped it. I have rode an arctic cat, a john deere 825i, a mule, and a rhino and out of all the ranger is my favorite. The ranger just seems to pull the hardest, ride the smoothest, and is very strong in my opinion. in the summer time our main use for the ranger is hauling fire wood. we fill the box all the way to the top of the cab and then we have a single place jet ski trailer covered with plywood hooked up to it with wood stacked up about 6 feet high and the ranger pulls that without even blinking an eye.

That's a pretty inaccurate statement for something that isn't even out yet.

Any body could slap together a "concept " toy and bring it to a show.

The new car auto shows are full of them, concept cars that never got built.

And just for the record, I'm not brand loyal, Own YAMAHA, Ski-Doo, and POLARIS, DODGE, GMC, Jeep.

Correct on the width not being an issue.

As I said before, re-visit this thread if that A/C is built.

As Ranlam posted above, even the much-hyped Commander didn't live up to expectations, not even close.

Check with NELSON's SPEED SHOP in Greenville, Michigan, LARGEST YAMAHA, ARCTIC CAT, POLARIS SKI-DOO dealer in the Midwest, and I believe the 2nd LARGEST A/C dealer in the Country.

They told me that 90% of the UTV sales are POLARIS

Not saying that Polaris isn't a good machine and I'm not surprised they own the market share, they've been making them longer than anybody and they offer the most models...no rocket science here. But I dont think the Wildcat is going to be a flop, I think there going to raise the bar with it. I've seen it up close and the engineers went over them and explained what we'll be getting as a production unit. Will they out sell the RZR? I highly doubt it as it's ONE high end model not a whole line up. Keep in mind that AC has been racing (and winning) the Baja races with the side by sides so I'm sure that's were this project is coming from.

Confirm that engine size and manufacturer?

Isn't A/ C suppose start building their own engines for 2013??

The ONLY good thing about the A/C is ( soon to read was) the SUZUKI powerplant.

It will have the Arctic Cat 90 degree V Twin 1000 in it. They wouldn't tell us the HP of it but they did say they were "massaging" it from it's current stage. I being a Suzuki dealer also really like the Suzuki mills but I understand them wanting to build their own engines. The ATV engines have been out since 2006-'07 I believe and have been holding up well. It's also nice to see a company bringing work TO the USA rather than looking for a place to have them built for pennies.

Well deserved zing for POLARIS regarding south of the border re-distribution of their RZR + ATV Production, as I don't like it anymore than any red-blooded American.

But then again, POLARIS has used Fuji in the past, and since 1998 +/- has switched over to ALL American made engines.

Most would call that BRINGING work to the U.S.A.

POLARIS ATV's, RZR's , & Sleds are more AMERICAN made than any other out there today, period.

Getting back to the mythical Wildcat and it's hypothetical powerplant;

What is the current H.P. rating ( not what they wish and hope to improve upon) on that 1000 c.c. engine that A/C has been building for a few years now?

And did you hear that Wildcat actually fire up and run? Be honest now.

Remember, it was you that firmly stated that A/C "Just caught up to the RZR"

By your response, (and avoiding my previous ????) I confirms that;

1) NO one ever heard the fictitious beast run

2) The H.P. on the existing 1000 A/C engine is less then the XP's 88 H.P.

3) Save your $$$ for next summer and perhaps we can meet at Silver Lakes Sand Dunes for a friendly little drag race and post that video.

It's all good, you clearly love the RZR and like to stick up for Polaris. Nothing wrong with that at all. I just had to say I got a good chuckle. :)

I'll admit I can talk my fair share of smack. Nothing like yourself or your buddy, Neil. BTW, next time you talk to Neil, tell him thanks for inviting me over for steaks the other night, they were great!

Why would I buy a UTV...I'm a dealer...I'll demo it!

the current HP on the AC 1000 is less than 88hp. They did say that the Wildcat will have more but they didn't have numbers for us. Not sure where your obsession with hearing it run comes from as they have had the 1000cc motor out for a while, IT DOES RUN. And lets not forget that this was just a sneak peak of the new Wildcat at the snowmobile dealer meeting and they told us that it will be in the 2012 line up.

Chad,

Just the facts, no obsession to hear it run. Just looking for a little side by side race, that's all. (And not on the video PlayStation version)

Point being it's a friggin concept vehicle that hasn't been test driven by anyone yet and it goes back to your original post, "Looks like Arctic Cat just caught up to the RZR", lol. Based on what, an Arctic Cat sales pitch?

So, you didn't hear it run in the Wildcat. period.

Will we meet up in Silver Lakes for a little drag racing?

When you were at Neil's (which you weren't) did you put some stain out on the rear deck on the trail?

Well John, my main goal in life is to entertain those around me.........................

I support what works, have Sea-Doo + Yamaha on waverunners, POLARIS on sleds,
and clearly the RZR is the ONLY game in town.

And for the record (can be confirmed on RZRFORUMS) Prior to the ACTUAL RELEASE of the RZR XP, last fall I was serious about swapping a Z1-Turbo into the old-style RZR-S, which is what Chad at WASTELAND is now doing.

As I posted here before, I feel that SUZUKI has the best h.p. and more reliable than most engines out there.

Arctic Cat attempting to build their own engines is a recipe for disaster...................................

Just look at the Prowler from a design standpoint, looks like a golf cart with Green Stickers on it, complete with vertical roll bar tubes.

Even Stevie Wonder can see that

Real sporty...................................lol

I'm sorry, I thought we were discussing the "soon to be" Wildcat and not the Utility/sport Prowler. Comparing the rollbar on the current prowler to your RZR is like comparing the boxes and saying the box on the RZR is worthless...witch it is, but that's not why you bought it. Nobody buys a Prowler to go the dunes either. Your RZR is a cool machine. Why do you think AC dealers are excited about gettin the Wildcat? Calm down, there's room for all of us to play.

After we drag race, we'll have to stop and get you a new pair of goggles, as your old ones will undoubtedly have sandblasted lenses.

Then we'll have to stop to repair the A/C as well I'm sure, plan on bringing a spare belt, clutches, (both primary & secondary) plugs, etc.

I'm up for the motocross track as well, Catching big air is fine with me.

If you're thinking of runnin' that A/C on the whoops, for more than just a few laps, you should probably bring the following:

1) Portable welder to repair all the fatigue cracks in the frame

2) Spare replacement shocks

3) Spare tie rods and A-Arms

4) Wheel bearings, front and rear

5) C-V Joints

6) Service Manual

7) Updated recall notifications

8) Winch (to winch it up onto the trailer)

9) Trailer, to drag that tired A/C home

I hate to date myself, but I built that '72 Colt in my garage and raced it at Byron back in '84.

Harsh? Just the facts

Well, I believe that you work on more POLARIS's. (or is it POLARII if more than one?)

By simple math, there's more of them, so if they were equally reliable, so it stands to reason that you'd be working on POLARIS products 75%-80% of the time.

Didn't think of that did you?

Do you find yourself working on the made in U.S.A. A/C engine compared to the SUZUKI? Be honest now.

All jokin' aside, did you ever ride an ATV or SxS from your shop up to Copper & back? I was looking to ride out of Presque Isle and try to run up to Copper and back this Fall. We make that run on sleds all the time.

On a UTV, What's the deal with the Police escort for crossing the bridge? Is it strictly enforced and limited for the scheduled 3x per day, or can I cross anytime??

I dont get much time to play to be honest with ya, and when I do I usually trailer somewhere to ride out in the woods more than on the trails. So no, I haven't been to the Harbor and back but it is more than do able. Once you get to either side of the bridge you can call the local authorities and they will escort you across the bridge. There should be signs on both sides with the numbers needed.

I hear what your saying...there will always be more Escorts on the road than CADILLACS!!!
And yes I thought of that...it's always been my Yamaha sled line! I wont get into what we see the most of in are shop as I do not want to offend anybody and although there are not as many of the Arctic Cat built motors out there yet (since they've only been making them since '07) I can honestly say I've only had one motor go. And I'm sure no matter WHAT this kid had under him, he would have destroyed it with ease!!! You just cant fix stupid.

I WISH it was a Hemi Cuda! I'm running a 440 with dual quads, it sounds mean and roast the tires but it goes NOWHERE! Not a drag car but fun to drive. It's been a project car since my parents bought it for me when I was 12, it was a rust bucket! I'm horrible at posting pictures but if your on facebook all my toys are posted somewhere in there. After years of wanting a hemi, my dad did finally get his a couple years ago...'69 Hemi Road Runner and it's all numbers matching! Beautiful car. While you guys were debating which UTV is better or faster, I was out riding the wifes RZR yesterday & heading out on the YZ450F today. Enjoying the 75+ deg. weather. lol Keep it going I'm enjoying it. We should all try to get out for a ride this summer, as long as ya don't mind riding with my wifes "Pink" RZR, I'm UP to White Pine a couple weekends a month.

I installed the radio in the RZRs this weekend - Plenty of volume now for the ride. Now if I could only get Oneida county to get off their rump and allow UTV's on township roads, I would be all set.

Just think if you throw a turbo on those toys! They are just cool machines. I talk a lot with a brand new one sitting in the garage that I rode down the road one time. I guess I shouldn't be talking turbo just yet lol

Guys,

I'm in if you wanna ride this spring, Nytro we were gonna hook up last year it just didn't work out. Kraven I have a cabin in Presque Isle and you can't ride in Vilas county, we would have to trailer to marinesco and go. I usually put in at bergland and ride to rockland but would love to ride some different trails. Wife got the polaris 800 two up and I ride dirt bikes. What do you guys think, any takers?

F.D.

I'd love to ride with you, but can't make it this Spring, but if we could shoot for a late summer early fall trip I could do that.

Regarding P.I.. I thought we'd be close enough to the border (Ridin' out of SKYVIEW) to where we could get away with runnin' a few miles of trails in Wisc before picking up trail 11-N, but since you're up there in the non-snow season, you would know better.

How about riding out of IRON County then???

We usually do a 3 1/2 day ride from MERCER to COPPER and back on sleds, been doing that run since '93, would like to see how long it would take on SxS's

IF they were to utilize the Z1-TURBO SUZUKI engine, that would be true, but sadly (because I would buy a Z1-Turbo SxS) that's not the case.

Dream on................................................ .................................................. .........

I hang out at the skyview all the time, also hang out at the wilderness and carlin lake lodge. I've never riden in WI cause they don't let dirt bikes on the trails unless its changed so now I"m forced to buy a SXS or another X2. I'm sure theirs lots of people who could show us around. I would like to ride with some people next winter as well, I think theres a few people on here that are in our area. Maybe meet at the skyview and go from their. snow or dirt, I just wanna ride. Anyone?

Kraven,

the trip to copper would take alot longer, you wouldn't believe how much of the trails are actually swampy or have creeks passing through them. Once you get on some of the grades you can make some time but sleds will be alot faster. No groomers in the summer

Regarding SxS's:
I thought the State of Wisconsin passed a law within the last year permitting SxS's thorough-out the State and only as a formality each individual County needed to adopt it???

Regarding Sleds,

Agree with you on ridin', I'm usually up for 3 sled trips per year up North, usually do a Friday night -Tuesday night stay. MERCER-COPPER + back 515 miles round trip. Approx 150 or so per day. Let's try to meet up to ride next winter. What kinda sled do you have?

Yeah, I figured it would definitely take longer by dirt than in the Winter. We have made MERCER-COPPER and back in 2 days on sleds a few times.

Thought we could make it in SxS's in 5 days????????

Wilderness is J.D.'s old place in Winchester, right?

Remember when they had all those restored antique sleds out there?
