While going out ice fishing last night the truck went through the ice, does anyone know of who to call about getting the truck out? We have already been in contact with the CG and DNR but having trouble finding a salvage service in Northern Michigan... any tips will help.

pics? links? I suspect there will be fines? does the trucks insurance cover this. Says in my policy NO. Twelve grand, must of been a ways out and in deep. Not really an easy item to recover on weak ice. thats about the same as to recover a sunken boat (20' to 35') using a barge with a crane on Lake Michigan.
Didn't find anything on it on 9&10 news or 7&4 news (both northern Mi channels).

Don't know where you are located. We are located in Rockland and this happened to us a few years ago. We had divers out of Chassel to go down and hook-up the truck. Somebody from town knew them and had them come up for us. The towing service was out of Bergland. I believe it was Howie's Towing. Yes it was spendy but they said they gave us a break. It wasn't even close to $12,000.00. If I remember right it was between $3,500.00 & $5,000.00 for both divers and towing. The expensive part was if we didn't get it out within 24hrs. The DNR fine alone was going to be $10,000.00 a day. Yes $10 thousand a day. We had a good group and yes it was out within 24 hrs. Good Luck and hope you can get it out soon.

I dropped my explorer in a few years ago, Cost was 10 thousand to get it pulled out. Insurance covered the whole bill including vehicle replacement. Not sure where your insurance is through but I know American family will cover it.

I didn't think you were covered by insurance for falling threw a lake with a vehicle.

if you look really close or save the image and zoom in you can see the running lights on top of the cab, near the front of the open water...

That ice doesn't look very thick, I don't think it will support a vehicle. Sorry. lol

Good luck on the recovery!

Where at in the UP is this? We are going fishing on Brevort Lake this weekend. Hopefully the ice is safe.

When this happened did the truck slowly sink or did it go down fast? If fast, how the **** do ya get out of it? haha

It went down slow... the ice went from 2-3ft down to 4-5"...

Give us location. Why so much to get it out? Insurance paying? What became of the truck? was it running when it sank? etc. we want the whole story. Inquiring minds need to know.

Islington Bay, Cedarville MI. Insurance is paying for it. Truck was still on when it sank. We got caught up in a burst of heavy snow and started to head back towards shore when doing so, we hit a spot where a spring is flowing... and the rest is best described in the picture...

He's avoiding the "location" question for some reason. Can't very well help out with a salvage company not knowing where the truck is located. We have a company here in Houghton Lake that does this kind of recovery if you are close to us. Hendershot Towing....Gaylord and Houghton Lake Michigan.

Years ago I helped a buddy of mine get a wrecker business started and did a lot of work for him on weekends to give him a break. At the time I was working full time a the sheriffs dept. He got a call of a car in a lake. I called the county dive team coordinator and asked if they would like to help on the recovery as a practice session. They gladly accepted and charged the recovery a few extra dollars that went back to the dive team fund. They played around awhile and let some of the new members go down a couple times. Then they took a cable line down and then we pulled it out.

Maybe your local dive team would help you for a contribution.

should have just reported it stolen. I think most insurance companys will cover this the first time, but after that I bet there will be clause in your policy,
same as when people wreck there own cars on racetracks during car club events.

My Haggery insurance on my 74 Pontiac states no coverage on a racetrack. Just means you have to drag to a road somewhere before you claim it. :)

We had a woman wreck a 2 year old Grand Prix in a spectator race at a local race track about 8-10 years back. They got some help and dumped the car into a bridge pileon(sp). Cops knew it was fixed right away. That was a 15-20k screw up. Not sure if they got in trouble for insurance fraud or not.

A while back, somebody dropped a sled in a lake. I think it was lake tomahawk in WI. Anyway, the diver they hired found about 10-20 sleds sitting on the bottom. Not sure whatever came outta that either.

My bud sank his sled, one of the locals got there and was able to hook the rear grab bar of the sled from the surface WITHOUT diving down.

He then CHAIN-SAWED a 5' "channel" in the ice all the way to shore, hooked it to a pick-up truck and dragged it out.

How close to shore are you?

Don't tell me it's the tree line 1/2 mile away.............................................. .......................................

That is how they got our truck out when it went in. Where it went in at you could only get to shore from one side. Yup it went down about 3/4 of the way across from that side. It was 17 feet under. Good thing the tow truck had a long cable. Diver went down hooked on the truck and then cut a a channel all the way to shore. Had to go really slow dragging it along the bottom. Went slow as we didn't know what was on the bottom and the drivers door was open and the the water it went in was an old mine pit. When it got to shore they then had to cut a big hole in the ice to bring it up on land. It is pretty deep along the shore that when they brought it out it came up straight up and down. It sure was shiney when it came up. Had been under water about 18 hrs. Brought it home dried it all out and it is still running today as our plow truck. We called it the yooper car wash!!

Is that a local authority in the picture (looks like a trooper hat). You sure have some stories to tell over and over in the years to come. Any idea on the bill yet?

we have used a ladder to get a sled out before

X2, We had a sled go through one year in 8 feet of water, the tail was on the bottom and the tip of the ski was hanging onto the edge of the ice, we couldnt get it up over the lip so we used and extension ladder to get under it and raise it up over the ice, the owner of the cabins that we stayed at was wondering what we were doing with her ladder :)

We couldnt get it out that night so we left it untill the morning, the water froze over and we had to break the ice up with the ladder
