grease guns - how do you keep them from turning into too much of a mess

Everytime I use my grease gun I swear 1/2 the grease has come out and gets everywhere. What am I doing wrong? Am I not releasing the pressure? Does the grease come out when the temperature changes? Doesn't seem like it should do that but who knows. I only use it to grease my sled once or twice a year.

Wow, if it's that bad I would opt for a new grease gun. I only use mine a few times a year too and it always has an oil film on it, I suppose it leaches out around the seals. The last couple of years I've gotten in the habit of using those neoprene gloves that the doctors use for, well you know. They keep your hands clean, they're disposable, and inexpensive. We use them a lot on the aircraft at work.

A new grease gun, some rubber gloves, and you're good to go.

I think it depends a lot what type of grease is in it. I've noticed the synthetics "leak" out a lot more. Couldn't tell you why. Not really much you can do about it as far as I know. I just store mine with a catch tub under it to keep the drippings contained.

Those guys with spotless grease guns make me sick. Do they even have grease in them? Mine is always a mess. Lowest drawer in tool box will never rust. I suspect lots of those blue shop towels are involved.

I use syn amsoil general purpose grease and its leaks like yours, always dripping. I guess its due to the warm summer temps, I keep mine in the oil drain pan. I think its a Plews, works good though.

I don't know I have 3 guns hanging on the wall all with different grease in them none leak. Are you sure you they aren't getting pumped? I prefer hand pump to lever pumps just easier to use.

Mine make a mess too. I keep mine in some old blue recycling trash bags so at least they don't make a mess everywhere.

Must be a slow night if we are talking leaky grease guns, lol. Never owned one that didn't leak some where. Gloves and shop towels for me.....

I store mine in a card board box, with a pair of rubber palmed gloves that i use just for greasing stuff. I only touch the box with clean hands so the outside stays clean.

I have several guns with different types of grease in them and place them all standing up in a 5- gallon bucket. Open the lever slightly and let the lever/handle hang outside the bucket and the main part of the gun inside. All the oil/grease stays at the bottom, and the gun stays relatively clean

Simular to how I hang mine & do not leak. Hangers keep gun upright & lever can't be pumped or jarred.

Pull the plunger after you are done greasing to take the spring
pressure off so the grease won't seep around the seal.

I do both what Kraven 700 & doomsman do, no problem with the grease gun leaking.
