I put 96 Woody's Signature Series 1.075" down the middle of my wife's sled ('04 GSX 600 SDI). Not sure if you absolutely NEED tunnel protectors (they were already on her sled when we bought it used) but they're inexpensive, easy to install, and are worth the peace of mind, IMO.

I definately would use tunnel protectors as the "tunnel" is also part of your cooling system.

Here's a site that may help in the selection and quantity of studs:

Here's a pic of a 500ss with 96 Woody's Gold Digger (1.075" length I believe) using the double backers.

I run 1.175 studs on a 1" track (have for years and never had any problems) I know woody's will tell you 1.075 is the right stud but 1.175 offers a little more penetration, definitly get the tunnel protectors.

I usually go one size larger than woody's reccomends as they are being careful and don't want tear out's. I haven't had any tearouts in 7 years with 4 different sleds studded that way, including with a 900 motor.

X2. This is what I have on my 600 SDI and just put on my wife's 500ss. Yes, definitely install 3/4"-1" tall tunnel protectors.
