They road/trail out to "Top of the world" was finally cleared of snow in July. We will be fine. the cams in town do nothing for what is there. Same with Tog. cam.

Winter_Time,

I'm almost your neighbor here in Lake Villa. We went out with Jacob and the crew last year to Ten Mile and had a blast. Going again this year end of March / start of April. Next year, we want to go to Cooke City as well. So, keep us posted on how the trip goes. Do me a favor, tell Rick that the Arctic Cat Guy just bought that "$50 helmet for his $5 head".

That was a huge avy, wow, it broke over the ridgeline, luckily nobody was on that side playing around. Very sad this happened, why do people refuse to listen to avy warnings? My first time in Cooke was 1998, as we were going up toward Daisy Pass, we stopped to look at all the chutes. My buddy says, looks like a ski hill, I said, looks like avy run out chutes. We never tried to climb any of them. Looks like these riders went right up the avy chute. Very sad indeed. Condolences to the family, I read on Snowest it was a father and son riding, the father is the one who died, reportedly from trauma. :(

Cooke City, MT Jan 23rd Ride Update......
Lots of fresh out in the area. With the avy danger being high we had a Flatlander Support Group Meeting at the 'top' to play in the meadows, trees and lakes. Boy the snow on 'top' is deep. Lots of untracked deep stuff. The new snow is quite 'sticky' and packs well making for tough stucks when the sugary bottom drops out.

The Southern Madison Range, Lionhead area near West Yellowstone and mountains around Cooke City:

Yesterday's calm weather allowed the snowpack to take a deep breath and start adjusting to last week's storm snow. This has helped overall stability. However, the pack is still far from achieving equilibrium.

The most recent storm deposited 3-4 inches of SWE, which fell on a very weak foundation of faceted snow. This weak layer is widespread in the mountains around West Yellowstone and is found on many slopes in the mountains around Cooke City. On Saturday, Mark observed a large natural avalanche on Scotch Bonnet which failed on facets formed prior to this latest storm (photo, video). Yesterday, riders in the Lionhead remotely triggered two avalanches on wind loaded slopes, a poignant reminder of the unstable conditions that exist in that area.

The avalanche hazard is trending down, but human triggered avalanches remain likely today and the avalanche danger is rated CONSIDERABLE

Day 3 here at Cooke City. I finally took the time to do all the password stuff and to get the Hotel Computer kinda switched over to work for me. It is dial up so be patient. I will not be posting pics for now. Jacob has that job. Avy conditions are a bit high. Tons of snow. Top of the world is were I have called home for the last 2 days and tomorrow. Yes we have carnage, not me!!! but the others will come forward in time. Heading out to some Honey holes at ???? (not telling) to do some filming for Flatlanders 2 and to do a cook out in the bush! The RMK Pro that I bought is to die for! I tried to blow it up today, no luck. lol I highly recommend the Pro RMK 800. Poo has it dialed perfectly. The sled loves to side hill and so do I. It is a great fit. It was minus 8 degrees this morning and I was testing some 1st layer stuff for Dunhams sporting goods today. Just shows you don't have to spend a lot to stay warm. Yes I also have my Klim and True North Adventure gear in tow. Sled Solutions thanks for the Mtn. Addiction gas tank, what a great setup! Now that I got this working I will report on Cooke City. Tons of snow, stay off the steep and deep for now but still plenty to ride!

Forgot to mention but we have excellent footage of a certain individual that Skeedoo shot some footage of, but we are waiting back to hear what his folks have to say before we show it. Oh and it was some great sledding video at that! We hope he and his sled is not down for the count!
Hope he is fine, Sled looks a bit long in the Tooth....

Today Cooke City is "Considerable" on ALL Slopes, so be careful. http://www.mtavalanche.com/currentThank you Kev, It changes constantly lately buy not for the better. They have Moderate posted at the hotel but was at extreme first thing this morning. We had blizzard like conditions all day. Rode in the trees, had limited visibility. We all are so thankful for the warming hut at Top of the World. Had a nice Canadian Bratworst cookout in the hut, Jeff provided the Brats.

I think wintertime will come forward with his story. missed riding with my little buddy today. And Jacob should have some good footage to show.
I think I found the best strudel in america here at Bear Claw Bobs. Bob and his wife are the nicest people to meet!
If anyone is interested in Mtn. riding it is the Polaris RMK Pro 800 you really need to look at. It is the sled of choice at Cooke City. The sled loves to side hill and run down the trails at 85 mph with a 2.4" track.

Cooke City, MT - January 25th ride report
It was a day for the trees at elevation. The wind was whipping around the light accumulation fiercely making visibility very low on 'top'. We managed to tuck in some meadows and play off the smaller lake edges avoiding the wind for most of the day.
The snow up top is blowing and drifting in pockets making for some fluffy powder. Our tracks from Tuesday had vanished before our arrival this morning, making for a pleasant ride in new snow.

Rode with POOrider1 today...here is a picture of him plowing some pow on the meadow edge.

This is the guy who bought your back pack last year from Lansing....couple of us were thinking about heading up to WaWa area weekend of Feb 18th. I'm a past trail rider, but converted off-trail rider, and the guys going have summits and renegades. We know the trail system well, but not so much the off-trail in the area, so would love to go with someone who might know the area. Do you know when you were thinking about heading to WaWa?

Saw that on snowest earlier. Very sad! Reports from Cooke are that they recommended no riding at all today.

This thread had me super worried. I have 4 friends who are sledding in Cooke City right now. Thankfully they are fine. Thoughts and prayers to the guy who was killed. Very sad.

Sadly, another sledder lost in Cook city. Ride safe folks and be aware of Avy areas and run outs around groomed trails.

GNFAC Avalanche Advisory for Fri Feb 24, 2012

Snowpack and Avalanche Discussion:

The mountains around Cooke City:
On Wednesday, a snowmobiler was killed in an avalanche on the groomed road leading to Daisy Pass. Four people were caught, one was fully buried and died, two were buried with an arm sticking out of the snow, and one was buried to his knees. All had rescue gear and the victim was uncovered in less than 10 minutes. He was caught with the tail of his sled still on the groomed road as he got off to turn it around. Yesterday Doug and Eric investigated this avalanche (video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G59UGoRqN0) and photos 1 (http://www.mtavalanche.com/images/12/miller-avalanche-3), 2 (http://www.mtavalanche.com/images/12/miller-avalanche-2), 3 (http://www.mtavalanche.com/images/12/miller-avalanche-1), 4 (http://www.mtavalanche.com/images/12/cooke-city-fatality), 5 (http://www.mtavalanche.com/images/12/miller-avalanche-path)) and will publish a full accident report in the next day or two. Unfortunately they were not able to examine the snowpack at the crown because snowfall and high winds had reloaded the starting zone of this avalanche. It may have been a naturally triggered avalanche and these riders were unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time. This fact is scary because avalanche terrain above the road is not obvious and I have parked my sled near this area many times.
Doug and Eric observed many other recent avalanches, but some were difficult to identify because the starting zones had been reloaded as well. Also on Wednesday, skiers triggered an avalanche on “Town Hill” just above Cooke City. It broke 2 ft deep and 300 ft wide. An avalanche warning was in effect for this area yesterday, and today the avalanche danger has only slightly dropped. Any slope steeper than 35 degrees has a HIGH avalanche danger. Less steep slopes have a CONSIDERABLE avalanche danger.

My guess is you'll enjoy Ten Mile a little more than your last experience.I know!!!! Had to have a big meeting and discussion about it again to night with the guys who are going. From our research we found that we were on the wrong side of the mtn. As far as cost it will be about the same as anywhere else I ride. I am totally on the fence on this trip, but Revkev and about 26 others who are going and ride there a lot say I need to go with them and they will change my mind. I guess we are actually going to Ryan Park. It will be a first there for me. And no we are not riding together in that big of a group. 4-6 per group.

Yup, now your headed in the right direction!!!! Its a whole different world down in Ryan park compared to up top. You wont have to deal with being blown off the mountain!

Just to give you a bit more confidence in your decision Ryan Park is my "go to place" when ever the weather turns ugly. Over the past ten years, 9 times out of 10, I have found the deepest snow on the range just to the east/northeast of there.
