I was looking through some pictures and thought it would be fun to share. I'll start with some very funny pic's. I call this group "Stupid Sledders". It was a spring time search and rescue. Just sleds not people.

By the way. I'm starting this in the middle of the week so we have a good selection by Friday.
How did all those sleds end up down there? Their all in the same spot, aren't they? I think I would've learned after watching 2-3 of my buddies go down.

Actually they dropped in off the other side and couldn't get up either side once they were in the valley. One guy broke some bones while rolling his sled trying to get back up. They walked out and left the sleds. I the spring, the little creek turned into a "BIG" run off and washed the sleds down down the river. The Polaris is the only one that was within eyeshot of where they left them. I boxed the slope on the far side to show you where they dropped in.

I can't beleive they couldn't get out of the Valley. Is it that steep and nasty all the way around it?

I m surprised no one claimed it as abandonment. Maybe is does not work that way. Imagine all the sleds in the valleys out west in the mountains.

These ridges had pretty steep sides and scrub brush at the bottom so it wasn't like you could take a long run at the hill. The police/dnr knew about it because of the injury and the rescue call. This place was remote. We had to ride ATV's 6 miles back on a rail road track that the power line ran along(Yes they were running the backcountry). When we finally got them out of the river we drug them to the tracks and left them. A couple guys made a cart that ran on the tracks and went back a couple weeks later and hauled them out of the woods. The ridges are roughly 65-80'. For comparison, the pink box depicts the hill and if you match it to the transmission tower you can get an idea of the hieght. For those who have never seen a timber wolf in the wild, This one came out of the woods to check us out while we were trying to find a good place to unload the ATV's.

Yeah, the ones I've seen BOLT when they see or sense you. They must be used to people around up there.

We couldn't figure out if he was interested in the food we had in the cab or the dog that was with us. He actually walked all the way up the the rear tire of the truck with his nose in the air sniffing to beat the band. He was a big boy. As far out as we were, I don't think this boy runs across many people. Give you a hint of where we were, On one of the 1st numbered roads of the 32nd state, near a town that one may admit their faith. Any guesses???
One more picture for fun!!!

These guy's would have had the same problem if we hadn't come along when we did, the snow drifted over the stream, and the Doo broke through, took about 6 of us and a strap hooked to a sled to get him out.

Wierd!!! Comes out of the ice and the running lights are still on. Was this on Lake Cherynobol?
The one pic looks like you are running the baptism river south of Finland? We run it from Finland fown to Hwy 1 quite often. I've also been through the exact spot those sleds were left in there. When did they get in there and get left? I was through there in early Feb and then again late march. It's not that big of a deal to get out of there. Climbing up the spot next to the pink box is fun. It was just past there this year that I clunked a rock and took out an a arm.
Here's a pic in the winter of where those sleds were stuck in the river. This was taken from the spot where he has the box drawn around

Elf - Where is that?
polarisrider1
10-08-2009, 01:32 PM
Elf, not sure what the issue was here. both sides look doable. Of course pictures make hills look smaller than real life. The 550 fan Trail/RMK is nothing more than an under powered switchback. Looks like the other is an M5? Need more Grunt to ride that type of stuff. Sad to hear people getting hurt though.
Don't get me wrong, the drop in from where I took the picture is very steep and the other side is steep as well but there is usually enough traffic through that area that there are pretty well worn paths through there. One time we went through this year there we had 3 shorties with and the 2nd time I was just with my wife and kids and I rode her 2 up up the steep side. Just gotta give her!!! If you go into there after a fresh snow with no other tracks I could see the challenge for shorties.
It would be a long walk out of there though, especially with those wolves around looking for a easy slow animal to catch!

what do you do with the sleds when you find them?
polarisrider1
10-08-2009, 05:16 PM
indy 500, you just leave them alone. They are not yours to touch.(your mom and dad said that also). The owners know where their sleds are.

He has a big brother with lots of "hand me downs". Kitty cat, 120, DS 50. I think my son is more excited than his mother and I. When we got home he wanted to show his brother all of the toys that they have to play with.

I found a pic of my 1st mountain creation. 136"track was the longest back then. It was a heavy brute but this thing could climb with any sled today. You just felt like you were riding a bull for a day when you were done. Does anyone remember the SummitX track? I called it the roto tiller. Everybody behind me called it the "chunk thrower". FYI The serial number on this sled was ...0003.

Here we are drying my daughters boots off after she broke through the ice playing near the open water. Don't know how many times I told her to stay away from the edge! Then once she breaks through she just stands there and cries. We had to dry off her boots, her socks, snow pants, and pants.

Was the water deep?

10-16-2009, 09:58 AM
It must have been a spring creek because there was a good 8-12" of water. We were in a pretty flat area (respectfully) so we may have been in a pool. Who knows with 6' of snow. Took 6 guys, 4 Sno Bungys, and 2 sleds.

the sick part about this picture is that it was taken in mid April in the U.P.. The bumper sits about 18" off the ground so you can see just how deep it was. http://www.johndee.com/discuss/messages/58069/116963.jpg

One more. Taken on October 12, 2007 about 5 miles due west of Baraga MI. Hard to believe i was pushing snow with my bumper in October.

OK, back to the original story and the best part. The guy that left his Polaris in the creek wanted to ride it out of the valley. We had rigged it with a rope and block at the top of the far ridge and were using a ATV to pull it up the hill. I was driving the ATV so I decided to give him a "good" ride with a little bit of speed. I didn't get to see it but these pictures show him trying to ride out a roll over half way up the hill. The only thing I was able to watch was the 5 guys at the top of the hill waving me to stop while they were laughing thier butts off.
