Anyone else heard about the cougar caught on trail cam around the Barbeau area, about 15 miles south of the Soo? Have seen a picture, looks like a legitimate picture but who knows if it is really from that area or not, all you can see is some grass. Just curious, I wonder if the DNR will ever admit to cougars being in Michigan. I have the picture that was emailed to me, but I am unsure how to post the picture.

We just had a cougar in Wisconsin, confirmed by the DNR, a couple years back. If I'm not mistaken, I think it made it's way into Illinois.

Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources said DNA evidence indicates that a big cat seen near Milton, Wis., is a wild cougar from North America. Researchers believe the cougar may have migrated from a population of the cats near the Black Hills of South Dakota, The Associated Press reports.

The appearance of the wild cougar is the first in a century, DNR researchers said. The team, led by geneticist Michael Schwartz, reported that the DNA matched that of cats from North America. Had the DNA matched that of South American cougars, researchers would have concluded that the big cat was a formerly captive animal that had managed to escape.

The DNA was taken from blood and urine samples. Pawprints, found near where the cat was sighted in the Rock County town of Milton, indicate that the cougar is a young male weighing about 120 pounds.

Wild cougars were last seen in Wisconsin in the early 1900s, according to DNR records. Adrian Wydeven, a DNR mammal ecologist, said the wild cougar population in Wisconsin could be on the rebound, just as the wolf population was in the 1970s.

Agree with above, be very careful as there have been several cougar sightings in Naperville and Oak Brook Illinois..... The cougars like to travel to Chicago on the weekends.

A UP cougar would be pretty damn scary compared to a Chicago cougar.

Yeah, that happened to one of my buddies. A rabid cougar wouldn't leave him alone while we were trying to eat dinner late one night in the UP. He kept flashing his wedding ring around but the cougar wouldn't back down. Later the cougar's daughter came and drove her home (the cougar didn't seem to be in any condition to drive). We laugh about that a lot.

Funny thing - in the MI Deer Regulations it states that it is illegal to shoot a cougar.

Madogg, I also noticed that when looking over the regulations earlier this year. Funny how they can make it illegal to shoot something that doesn't technically exist in our state?

Didn't that cougar that was in Milton get blown away in Chicago by a bunch of trigger happy cops? (no offence if your a police officer) I remember over 18 rounds fired and they also took out someone's AC unit with a stray bullet.

Yep, found it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-chicago-cougar-shot-webapr15,0,9814 7.story (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-chicago-cougar-shot-webapr15%2C0%2C98147.story)

At first, I'm thinking there's a gun battle in the street," said Greene
The officers had shot holes in an air conditioning unit on the side of Greene's house while aiming for the tan cougar, which died in the alley near Greene's garage.

The Illinois DNR has passed new rules imposing a daily bag limit of 4 Cougars with no more than 4 Cougars in possession at any one time. Baiting is illegal; Cougar in heat and old man masking scents may be used. Bonus tags are available for purchase for use in Chicago only. The DNR retains the right to increase limits if necessary to control the Cougar population.

This is bad for snowmobiling. Now new trail proposals will have to go through cougar habitat analysis. Most of us that have been in the woods around here have seen some evidence of them in the past.

This cougar was spotted and treed two different times near Spooner, WI within the last year or so. I know the guy that the DNR called to use his dogs to tree it. They tried to tranquilize it but failed as it was too high in the tree and they didn't want to injure it as it fell to the ground. The DNR wanted him to continue trying to tree the cougar but he felt they were stressing the cat too much. I was careful with my dog for several weeks, that's for sure.

MI DNR had to confirm cougar this time if everything checked out. Which it did. MI and other Mid-West DNR doesnt want to cross the line into "Cougars are Breeding" and then Fed Endangered Acts kick in.
More regs, programs, and State money. With no return.

And since these are the same exact species, which means they are the same animal...we must conclude that there are more than one??? Or does that mean going up stream they are cougars and down Mt. Lions, or visa versa??

Back in 1995 around the fall time my son, daughter, and I were traveling across the seney stretch about 1:30 am and had a big cat cross the road right in front of us and all three of us seen it. My bright lights were on because there wasn't any traffic out. I'm telling you 3 or 5 seconds sooner and it would have been all over the front of the suburban we had at the time.
