Backpack Recommendations...

I have never needed to use a backpack in the Yoop, but am making it out to WY this year and am in the market for a pack. Please let me know what you guys like and why. I do know I want one with external shovel storage.

X2 - but I'm biased as that's the only one I've ever owned. The only complaint I have are the two velcro straps that hold your shovel handle off over your right shoulder. I've had two incindents out in the woods, where I ducked to avoid branches without noticing the handle getting snagged and ripped away from the pack. The handle stays pretty straight up/down even when you bend. (Glad my buddies saw it happen). I've since resorted to splitting the extension in two peices so it fits in my pack. (It's the ony way to fit it in there.) Other than that, it's extremely durable with a lot of storage.

Same here. New handle costs almost same as entire shovel.

The first pack i used was TNA Adventure pack it was like a giant counter weight on my back so I bought the HMK pack and used it for 2 seasons but again it felt like a counter weight and when riding trees the shovel handle would catch every low hanging branch I went under and nearly yank me off the sled. Switched to the Klim NacPack it was narrow and very comfortable to wear didn't really notice it there until I got into the trees and same problem again 2 seasons on that one also. This year I am going with the BCA Throttle pack that houses the shovel, handle,and prob inside in a seperate compartment. I also like the way the hydro tube is sleeved and the adjustable suspention system is similar to the Klim so I can set it up to ride higher on my back and not give me that counter weight feel. Plus no shovel handle sticking out in the breeze to catch on tree limbs! It's actually easier and faster to pull the shovel and handle out this pack than it was on the packs where it's mounted externally!

The newer HMK packs are designed to mount the shovel handle upside down and then the head has a buckle added besides the two velcro straps to secure the shovel handle. DO NOT keep your probe in the outside holder. It doesn't have any failsafe to stop the probe from getting ripped off in the same way that your handle does. Keep your probe inside your pack because if the situation arises that you need it you really want to make sure that you still have it.

I've now got the True Adventure Gear - Lightning Pack. Got it last spring. External shovel holder good size not too huge. (I like the external pouch since you can get to the shovel faster and you can turn the handle around so the handle isn't sticking out) I had my old mountaineering back pack from college with me for my Western adventure last and is was WAY to big. This pack is a nice medium at 1300cu.in. I plan on having my tunnel pack set-up this year to put more of the bulky items that I won't need should I ever get separated from my sled. They also just came out with the Lightning Strike Pack this year. Made from lighter materials then the lighting, made with an internal blade pouch and a little cheaper cost.

I like the Storm pack. It is one of the biggest packs out there storing 2600 cubic inches and comfy. It weighs a lot when loaded but I have gotten used to it and feel naked without it. I was out riding on a warm day and took my shell off and was able to fit it in the pack. When you're not carrying a lot you can use the draw straps to reduce the size of the pack. Go big or sit on the stoop with PolarisRider1 I say.

I have the HMK pack and it is decent. I have also lost 2 shovel handles using it. My advise on packs is simple. The bigger the better. I run out of space fast in the HMK pack.

I just picked up a back country pack from Cat, made by Ogio. It has compartments for external shovel storage, handles have a seperate pocket on the side. Same for Avy probe, hydration compatible, pockets for goggles, audio etc. I tried to get an HMK a few weeks ago as that is the kind of shovel I have, but, they were out of stock. I wanted to make sure I had one so I nabbed this one. I have never had the need for one before, so this is new to me. Can't wait to put it in the truck & head to WY.-Mezz

I have used the Klim Nac Pac for several years and have never had any complaints.

If you have not taken an avy class get an abs pack.

Yet to take an avy class, but I would like to take one before our trip in March. If nothing else via the web. I live in MKE area and missed the one at the show due to other commitments.

Klim Krew Pak! Plenty of storage and not too bulky.

I have the Survival on Snow pack and have been very happy with it. The probe and handle for the shovel are both enclosed so that they cannot hook on tree branches. The pack somewhat floats on your back, so I don't even know it is there. Here is the link - www.survivalonsnow.com/accessories.php

Not trying to sell Klim, but I did get my new NAK-PAK. nice... Not real big... and has exterior shovel set up. I like it so far... going riding on Sun. and will give it the first test...

Carter weren't you using a Klim Pack last yr. Looked small but you had most everything you needed in it. Except for 150' of rope lol. and a full set of craftsman tools. I will never let you forget that.
