    Default what would you do?

So I work in a truck shop as a mechanic. Anyways, Wednesday night I had a holiday traveler come in and ask to borrow a floor jack. He was changing a tire on his van and it rolled off his jack. So I say yeah I sure do. So I let him take and he never brought it back. Normally when I borrow something out I will ask for a driver's license or credit card. This time I forgot to. I haven't talked to the shop manager yet but I've heard from a couple of guys that I need to buy the shop a new one. What do you guys think on how this should be handled. Thanks.

I'd talk with your manager at the first opportunity before he goes looking for the floor jack himself. Let him know what happened and offer to replace it. Be upfront and be honest, most likely he'll assume the cost. But if he doesn't, consider the cost of replacement verses what you earn in a year's time. It's not worth damaging your reputation or job security.

As for the thief, what goes around, comes around. There's a thing called Karma.

And never loan tools out again, they are your income.

Yep, be honest and up front with him right away and he will appreciate that. That really is the only option IMO.

You were just being helpful. Nothing on your behalf was irresponsible or misguided. It's a shame that you can't trust your fellow man. Be honest, upfront, and do it without sitting on it. Just get it out right away.

Replace the jack ASAP, with one that is the same or nicer. Tell your boss what happened. You can't expect him to eat the jack. Sad this happens, Nice guys finish last. And you never know the guy just may bring it back, maybe he was running way late for something and hasn't made it back through yet. The "I forgot to" part puts it into your court.

Get it done today if you can. IF you need to buy a jack, I'm sure today would be the day with all black friday deals going on. Just keep the receipt in case the other guy returns the one he took.

1st thing I would have done is filed a police report if not do it today.remember we live in a camera saturated world and the cops may just know of a cam that could have caught a plate.
with out a police report your employer will have a harder time claiming the loss on his taxes.

Talk to manager, file police report, buy a new jack, and take it as lesson learned the hard way.

First, what you did makes me proud that you belong to the human race...saying "sorry...can't help you" is what TOO much of American has become today...punishing one person for another persons lack of human respect makes no sense whatsoever to me.

And because someone has found a working scam, making money on those who would have some sense of helping hand, is an indication of how sick some of our society has become. Stealing little old lady purses fits in this same box.

While in hind sight, gathering up some I.D. and car registration would have likely prevented this, don't beat yourself up for being a decent human being....I would shake your hand if I could.

Definitely take it up with the boss....this is a theft...pure and simple. He may be able to get this covered by his insurance....if not then the decent thing to do is to buy a used jack in like or better condition to replace the one that got stolen....

Now think back to what you could have done BETTER which would have secured the use of the jack. Deposit, I.D., wallet....what ever and don't let this fools scam remove you from the human race of decent human beings....there are fewer and fewer people alive to pass on this sort of gene pool. We need MORE people like you around, not less. Helping your fellow man out in a bind is a very proud attribute to pass on to your children and grandkids.

Looking this poor fool in the eye and telling him..."sorry, can't do it", is akin to driving by a man with a broken leg, or walking past a blind kid trying to cross a busy street...while it happens all the time by many, those that do it are some very sorry individuals.

Yes Booondocker, well said indeed. Heed his advice.
I would tell your boss ASAP and get a nicer one to replace it. If he returns it later, keep the old one for yourself. If he don't.... What a POS he is for abusing ones generosity. May bad karma and real bad joojoo rain upon him.
