Planning my first purchase EVER! this fall. Won't be new, but hoping for a 2009/ 2010 Poo, most likely an RMK. Starting to get a little worried with the threads I'm reading on here, but my father-in-law has ridden them his entire life (and lets me ride them also). Anyway, plan to spend around $5K - $6K. I don't know a ton about sleds, but have absolutely fallen in love with the sport, and the Wife FINALLY caved (after 10 years of me riding her dad's). Any advice on purchasing a used sled would be most appreciated, would like a 600 w/ 136 - 144 track. I origianally thought a 136 would get me anywhere I wanted to go, but quickly found out during this winters trip to the Black Hills this is not the case. Anyway, do I need to be concerned with the power of a 600 vs 800 with the possible 144 track? Any other advice would be great as well. Thanks everyone! Oh, one last thing - I know there are many trailer options out there, but what I'd like to know is (assuming) I end up with a 144, would it fit on a 10ft trailer or would I need a 12ft? Hanging off isn't a concern of mine, but what is a concern is me wanting to eventually go with a capped trailer and it needs to close. LOL! Thanks!

I applaud your determination! You have to love the sport if you worked at getting your own for 10 years! I'll give you my two cents (like you had a choice in the matter).
Before you completely commit to used, check for some last year's or non-current models. The RMK 600/144 is a nice sled but doesn't sell as well as the 800 so there are often some left in inventories at the end of the season. I think the Polaris dealer in my area had four 2011's left last time I stopped there. Again, because of the smaller engine and market, the 600's are way cheaper! I would bet that you can come very close to your upper price range on a 2011 if you can find the right dealer.
People often reject the 600 because of concerns about power in the mountains and this will most likely be an issue if you're doing a lot of mountain riding but for the Midwest the 600 is a nice fit. I would not be too concerned about a lack of power here and even in the Black Hills. I'm guessing that the 600's of today have as much power as a lot of the 800's of a few years ago. As far as Polaris engine reliability, I'm going with Polaris myself next year so we may both be in the same kettle of fish.
BTW, I have been riding a 600/144 (Doo) for years and it has served me well.
As far as the trailer, I cannot believe it would fit on a 10' trailer with a cap. My machine is easily over 10 ft long and I actually passed up a 10ft enclosed for that reason. I would go with a 12' in case you end up with a 155"

Thanks a ton for the advice, I really do appreciate it. You bring up a good point regarding the carry overs, I'll make sure to do that. I've never really understood how much "wiggle room" the dealers have, but if they've got several of the 600's as you stated, they may be willing to work with me (fingers crossed). I live in IA, but willing to drive a waise to get to one of the dealers up North if I find the right sled. You also give sound advice on the 12ft tailer as I could easily see a 155" in my future someday down the road. I'm new to this site, but this is exactly why I frequent it as much as I do. 1st- John was spot on with his forecast for my Black Hills trip this winter, and 2nd- great (experienced) people such as yourself willing to give good information to us newer riders. One lat thing, would you be willing to share the name of your dealer in MN? It's within the driving distance I would consider if they have what I want. Thanks again!

As you well know, the past couple yrs in IA haven't been worth even having a ride, but I'm hopeful we'll have a repeat of a couple winters ago. I will without a doubt be heading up north when the time is right, thanks for the suggestion. What's your current ride?

I hear ya on the last 3 Iowa winters. Not good! This last year we made 2 trips to the UP and 1 trip to Northern WI to get some miles on the sleds. Otherwise, it was a bust. At the very end of the season I purchased a brand-new 2012 Polaris Switchback 800 Pro R. It sits in storage with 0 miles until next year. Switching over from an '06 Crossfire 700 Sno Pro. For the most part all my sled purchases have come from the Minneapolis area. Much better market for sleds. Jim
