Default Am I thinking the right way here?

So, I sold my truck on Sunday for twice what i paid for it ($3200, bought it for $1600). Last wednesday I went and looked at a truck that I really liked, 00 Silverado with 115k on it. He was asking $7700. Another guy looked at it Friday, said he'd probably buy it and it wanted it held for him until he could come up with the $. On monday, assuming the truck was still for sale, I called the guy. He told me it was on hold for somebody. That "somebody" still hasn't come up with the $. He needs to take out a loan, borrow some $, etc. etc. I told the guy I could come give him $7500 cash RIGHT NOW. Well a day goes by and it's Tuesday. He said he called the guy again, and once again, hasn't come up with the $ yet. This guy doesn't have any $ down on the truck, and is going to buy it for less than what I offered. Now if you were the seller, wouldn't you let me come pick it up, in CASH for MORE than what somebody else offered??? The seller said he is holding it until Saturday for this guy. SATURDAY! R U KIDDING ME!?! Who puts a truck on hold for a week? Without any $ down? Am I thinking backwards here? What if this guy backs out, and I find something by then? The sellers screwed!

He must be pretty confident the guy will come up with the cash.

I say go find another, and if you do, buy it. If not, and this one is still available, tell him your offer has gone down.

I agree 100%. If he says in a few days you can have it, tell him your offer is less because you may have found something else or for making you wait.

I did something similar for someone once too, but it was only for a few days. I wouldn't have done it if I wasn't confident that the buyer would come up with the cash or that, if they didn't, I'd be able to sell to someone else for the same amount. I gave the buying family my word that I would hold the vehicle, so I personally felt obligated (not that I had any legal obligation). Maybe it was stupid, but that's just the way I roll. I wouldn't have told them I would hold it if I wasn't confident they would come through.

Anyway, for your situation, I would call him Saturday morning, tell him you're still interested, and that you've been looking around at other trucks, and you'd be happy to give him $7,000 immediately in cash. Then negotiate from there. You'd be happy to get the truck for $7,500, but you might as well try to get it a little cheaper when you know he doesn't have another sale lined up.

can not blame the seller for holding up his end of the bargain with the proposed buyer.7700 is way too much for a truck that old especially a chevy.

I'd tell him "my offer goes down $100 day, call me when you want $$$."

Dealer would've gave me 6k for my '01 Silverado with 120k miles, that's with rusted out rocker panels and cab corners rusted out. So 7k isn't high if it's in really good shape.

Sold it to my buddy for what the dealer offered just so wouldn't have to put up with tire kickers like that.

Hope it turns out for you Indy. But if not there's a ton of them out there of the same age.

Agree with rp7x. I have bought and sold many rides in my day, and the common practice is to put down at least SOMETHING! Even if that's only $100 bucks. This way as the seller, if they don't come thru you've atleast made something for having it "off the market" for a period of time. No way I would hold anything for anyone unless they had some money upfront to put down. If they can come up with apprx $7500 in a week, they should easily be able to come up with $100 - $200 in the mean time. If they can't, then to bad, so sad. IMO, I would keep looking for a different truck, there are to many out there to focus so much of your time/ energy on one. You'll probably find one you like better if you keep looking!!

    Indy-
As the buyer, it is not your responsibility to worry about the seller. Your responsibility is to get the best deal. You made him an offer, he declined. That offer is off the table. Remember that...a declined offer is off the table.

Keep looking. If he calls back, make him another offer, for less. It's a new offer, and there is one less buyer in the game.

    I agree with docsnomo.

Also, like some have stated, if he state he would hold it for 'x' number of days, then he has a good set of morale's and is holding up his end of the the deal. Obviously his loss if it doesn't pan out.

There are a lot of deals out there, keep looking.

Face it. He's not a motivated seller. The "someone else" may be his brother. Move on and Keep lookin'. Its not a deal lost cause ya never had a deal. Leave a number and walk and maybe he will call. But dont wait by the phone.

I'm in the process of selling my boat and have the same situation. Guy saw the boat, liked it but wants to test drive it before he buys it which is totally acceptable. He didn't give me anything down and I got a bunch of emails this weekend about the boat. I called him and asked him for a small deposit and he wouldn't do it because he has been waiting on me to get the title and to be available. He is finally starting to frustrate me by not agreeing to some simple terms/requests. I might go back on my word since his latest comment says he'll buy the boat "if he likes it" after test driving it. He could always give me a refundable deposit pending a test drive and any issues coming up. I learned my lesson on this deal trying to be the nice guy since he has been patient with me.

The problem is, this one is the EXACT color scheme I want, no rust, not a dent or scratch in it, LOW miles, already has tinted windows, AND the Flowmaster exhaust I want. The rims are in good shape, and the tires are almost new. Every truck I go to look at, if it has no rust, the tires are bad, or the rims are really pitted, or theres dents and scratches in it, or the a/c doesn't work... I'm really anal about stuff and this one is the one I want. If Saturday rolls around and the guy backs out, I'm thinking of offering him $6700 for the hassle. I'm also considering buying a $3500 99 Sierra Classic (5.7, OBS) its pewter, has good paint, no dents, or bent body parts, a fair amount of rust is the downside but has push button 4, bucket seats, gray interior, as long as it has LSD and keyless entry I will probably make the hour+ drive to go look at it. It has 150k (pretty low) looks in REALLY good shape unlike my old one. I would have $ left over to put tires/rims/lift/etc. into it.

I was trying to be the nice guy and had no issues not getting a deposit because I didn't have other buyers lined up. I got 4 emails in one weekend and then started to think about it. Live and learn I guess and if the "new" guy who looked at it last night gives me a deposit it is his. I should know more tomorrow.

So what is the safest way to transfer a large sum of money from buyer to seller? I really don't want to walk around with that much cash. So far the only way I feel good about it is going to his bank and getting the cashiers check issued to me right there. Thoughts?

Dont buy a 04 my z71 was junk at 130k will never by a GM again.
The older ones were great but not the new built like cars not trucks.
You buy a GM to drive to church and a ford to work and a dodge to support your local tranny shop
