Ok so here goes. I have a 02 zr 600, that i got a great deal on. Problem is the person i bought it from filled out a bogus reg and never sent it in. I have the info from the previous owner and the mn reg info, any ideas what to do. Also have a 2000 snopro i'd like to use as a back up. it was a race sled and never reg'd. I've been told i will have to pay tax on msrp when new. Any help would be great.
    Thanx

I would just try and register in in Wi if you are going to ride there. You can do it over the internet. I would also try to send it in to Illinois and see what happens. I do not think you will have a problem get a registration in Illinois with the age of them. I just never had any luck with Illinois trying even to give them the sales tax from a new sled I bought in Indiana. They wanted so many forms I just did it in Wi and will not send any money to Illinois if I can help it.

yes I do you just do it over the internet and the stickers come. Its cheaper then buying the permits in WI each year. dnr.wi.gov for some reason the site will not work right now

You can register in WI, but you will get a ticket if you ever ride in IL and are not a WI resident. Been there, done that, got the ticket. If you never plan on riding IL, no big deal. If your registered in another state, you have a 30 day grace period to ride in IL, but you MUST PROVE residencey of that state!

I think it was $35 for 2 years. And you do not have to worry about trail permits then.

If you bought the sled used, you don't pay sales tax in IL IIRC. I bought a 2000 SRX from a private party last year and it hadn't been registered in IL previously, only MI several years prior. I didn't pay any sales tax and registration was fairly easy..just took some time for them to process. The clerk I spoke with said they only have 2 people processing all registration forms for snowmobiles & ATV's. Check out the IL DNR page. http://dnr.state.il.us/admin/snow.htm#Tax

You will also be asked to pay tax in WI, I just bought a new/used sled reg in WI as a resident and had to pay tax. And it is $35 for 2 years.

    Matt,

    what amazza said....

I have been thru this numerous times it is a simple task registering snowmobiles in Illinois is as easy as it gets, I had to register 2 sleds this year that were NEVER registered from new!!
one sled was from WI, the other from MN.

All you need to do is simply fill out the Illinois registration form on that form there is a spot for the name address ect.. of the previous owner also on the form is a spot for the previous owner to sign if the regisration is lost, fill it out send in your 18 bucks and your set done deal, you do NOT need to put a bill of sale in there BUT just for good measure if it makes you feel better throw one in, even though it is not necessary.

Illinois does take a long time to process it's applications so I would get moving on it.

    Hope this helps....

I tried to register a 2006 Doo in Illinois 1.5 years ago when I bought it. Illinois wanted a serial number from the motor along with a chassis serial number. After calling Bombardier, dealers, mechanics, and looking all over the motor, I could not find the serial number. I registered the sled in both Wisconsin and Michigan, mostly where I ride. Now I don't have two trail passes glued to my windshield, and my sled is registered.

Registering in Wisconsin is a good idea, but just remember.......that day when 9 inches drop in illinois and your sleds are in the garage and you got the itch, you can't ride 'em. Illinois is only $16 for 2 years, but then you have to buy a wis. trail pass. It's a crapshoot my friend. Pick your poison.

Pman592 you still have to have a MI trail permit even if your registered in MI.

You can still operate a sled in Illinois if it is registered in another state. I took this from the Illinois DNR website. You have to be a little careful. Like I said before, I TRIED to register in Illinois, but could not find the engine serial number.

B Covered by a valid registration or license of another state, province or country which is the domicile of the owner of the snowmobile and is not operated within this State on more than 30 consecutive days in any calendar year.

Note that the key words in pman592's post are the following:
"another state, province or country which is the domicile of the owner of the snowmobile"
So if your domicile is in Illinois, you're screwed!
